Insulin glargine is a biosynthetic human insulin analogue that controls blood glucose levels over 24 hours without a pronounced peak. In most studies in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), insulin glargine did not significantly reduce fasting blood glucose, fasting plasma glucose or hemoglobin A1c compared to NPH insulin. Most trials showed a statistically significant decrease in the incidence of nocturnal and symptomatic hypoglycemia.

Research Methods And Procedures: In a longitudinal study of 2888 nondiabetic Mauritians aged 25 years to 74 years who participated in population-based surveys in 1987 and 1992, changes in body mass index (BMI), waist/hip ratio (WHR), and waist circumference were compared between "hyperleptinemic," "normoleptinemic," and "hypoleptinemic" groups. "Relative leptin levels" were calculated as standardized residuals from the regression of log10 leptin on baseline BMI to provide a leptin measure independent of BMI.

As part of a population-based survey on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius in 1992, glucose tolerance was classified using a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test on 6,553 persons. Subjects with newly diagnosed (n = 358) or known diabetes (n = 388), and a random sample of one in four subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (n = 165), had stereoscopic 45 degrees retinal photographs taken of three fields in the right eye after mydriasis.
