Three m-terphenyl ligands 2,6-Ar2C6H3(-) [Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3 (2,6-Xyl); 3,5-Me2C6H3 (3,5-Xyl); 2,3,4,5,6-Me5C6 (Pmp)] have been used to stabilise three series of two-coordinate Group 12 diaryl complexes; (2,6-Ar2C6H3)2M [M = Zn, Cd, Hg, Ar = 2,6-Xyl 1-3, 3,5-Xyl 4-6, Pmp 7-9], where differing steric demands on the metal centres are imparted. These are the first homoleptic d-block complexes featuring any of these ligands. Complexes 1-9 have been characterised in solution and the solid state; the analysis of structural changes produced by differences in ligand properties is reported.

We found that 33% of men on ADT had osteoporosis of spine, hip, or forearm by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), thus requiring treatment. Using the new fracture prediction algorithm (FRAX) tool with corrected femoral neck T-score identified only 17% requiring treatment, and, if calculated without femoral neck, 54% were identified to need treatment.

Objective: To examine changes in plasma leptin levels and resting energy expenditure (REE) during short-term refeeding of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN).
Method: This was a longitudinal study of 21 women meeting the DSM-IV criteria for AN who were admitted to the hospital for renutrition. Height, weight, percent body fat (assessed by skin fold thickness), REE (measured by indirect calorimetry), and circulating plasma leptin concentration were assessed at the time of admission and 7 days later.
A research-based project was conducted to introduce structured pain assessment on a surgical ward at a general hospital in Kenya, East Africa. The aim was to improve pain control, and subsequently patients' recovery and satisfaction with care. It was agreed that the ultimate aim was to develop and use a common tool for pain assessment throughout the hospital, thereby reducing disparity in various clinical areas, and raising standards of patient care.

The project addressed curriculum revision, mentorship, audit of clinical learning environment, developing teaching and assessing skills in qualified staff, establishing a computerised student allocation system, and post-basic and in-service education. The first three will be described in detail, with some reflections on the experience of introducing change in an environment which was both familiar and strange to the author.
