Article Synopsis
  • Amphotericin B (AmpB) is a potent antifungal drug known for its effectiveness but also for its toxicity, which raises interest in improving its safety and efficacy profile.
  • Gladiolin, a polyketide antibiotic, has been found to significantly enhance the antifungal effects of AmpB, particularly against drug-resistant fungal strains and biofilms, without harming mammalian cells.
  • The study reveals that gladiolin interacts with fungal membranes in a unique way, boosting AmpB's two main actions—ergosterol sequestration and pore formation—thereby providing insights into how to better exploit AmpB's properties while mitigating its side effects.

Article Synopsis
  • - Delirium is a serious mental state disturbance seen in hospital patients, affecting attention, memory, and perception, and occurs in 18% to 25% of inpatients, especially during critical illnesses.
  • - Neuroimaging techniques reveal brain changes—like atrophy and disrupted blood flow—while EEG studies show abnormal brain activity patterns related to delirium.
  • - Understanding the role of inflammation and metabolic processes, along with animal models that simulate delirium, can help identify how it develops and lead to new treatment strategies.

Background: Microglial cell iron load and inflammatory activation are significant hallmarks of late-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD). In vitro, microglia preferentially upregulate the iron importer, divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1, gene name Slc11a2) in response to inflammatory stimuli, and excess iron can augment cellular inflammation, suggesting a feed-forward loop between iron import mechanisms and inflammatory signaling. However, it is not understood whether microglial iron import mechanisms directly contribute to inflammatory signaling and chronic disease in vivo.

Objective: The current study examined how college students search online for mental health information and the impact of these searches on mental health literacy, stigma, and help-seeking.

Method: Undergraduate participants ( = 270; Fall 2015 to Spring 2019) were randomly assigned to search online for information about coping with anxiety for themselves or a friend (experimental activity), or to utilize Google Maps to answer navigational questions (control).

Results: Participants who conducted an online search demonstrated greater mental health literacy including optimism about psychotherapy, and lower levels of certain types of stigma, but lower willingness to seek/recommend professional help.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia is defined as pneumonia that develops in a patient who has been on mechanical ventilation for more than 48 hours through an endotracheal tube. It is caused by biofilm formation on the indwelling tube, which introduces pathogenic microbes such as , and into the patient's lower airways. Currently, there is a lack of accurate models of ventilator-associated pneumonia development.
