Background: Rates of recurrence, metastases, and mortality for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the upper limb have not been clearly defined.

Objective: We aimed to characterize these tumors and assess the long-term outcomes, comparing with current literature.

Methods And Materials: A retrospective review was performed on 100 consecutive primary cutaneous upper limb SCCs managed surgically by a single hand surgeon between 2012 and 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • - The report discusses a patient with complete insensitivity to pain, experiencing painless fractures and joint hypermobility, linked to a family history of similar conditions among maternal relatives.
  • - Genetic testing initially yielded normal results, but optical genome mapping revealed a homozygous deletion in a specific gene that causes impaired pain sensation, indicating recessive disease inheritance.
  • - The study highlights the effectiveness of optical genome mapping as a diagnostic tool for identifying structural variants in cases where standard testing fails, making it a more accessible option than traditional whole-genome sequencing methods.

Every fall, juvenile sea turtles in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean are threatened by rapidly declining water temperatures. When sea turtles become hypothermic, or cold-stunned, they lose mobility-either at the surface, subsurface, or the bottom of the water column-and eventually strand at the shoreline where rescue teams associated with the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network may search for them. Understanding the effects of ocean currents on the potential stranding locations of cold-stunned sea turtles is essential to better understand stranding hotspots and increase the probability of successful discovery and recovery of turtles before they die in the cold temperatures.

The presence of in-feed anti-sea lice drugs and their relationship with organic enrichment is poorly understood in sediment surrounding salmon farms. Using data from an aquaculture monitoring program (2018-2020), we describe this relationship at ten sites in four Canadian provinces. Three anti-sea lice pesticides (lufenuron, teflubenzuron, emamectin benzoate and metabolite desmethyl emamectin benzoate), and one antibiotic (oxytetracycline) were detected.
