Vaccination against paratuberculosis of all newborn animals has been performed since April 1984 in two dairy herds with a high incidence of clinical cases of paratuberculosis, using a vaccine containing heat-inactivated M. paratuberculosis in a water/mineral oil emulsion. Animals slaughtered between April 1984 and January 1991 were included in the study.

Several veal calves that had received doxycycline died suddenly. Post mortem examination revealed pulmonary oedema, myocardial degeneration, and myocarditis. It is possible that hitherto unknown interactions between doxycycline and other compounds may have played a role.

Enterotoxaemia caused by Clostridium perfringens was diagnosed in a goat affected with severe enteritis which was found to be present at autopsy. Lesions bearing a resemblance to tuberculosis, caused by a Rhodococcus equi infection, were observed in the liver and lungs. This bacterium is constantly isolated from pulmonary abscesses in foals affected with pyemia.

Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) was detected in the Netherlands for the first time in 1987. A total number of five mares (Dutch saddle-horse) were infected in three separate outbreaks. The origin of the infection could not be determined in any of the cases.

Cases of human infection caused by Listeria and resulting from the consumption of dairy produce contaminated by Listeria are referred to in the literature. A case of mastitis in cattle, caused by Listeria monocytogenes type 1/2a, is reported. The result of treatment of the infected quarters with penicillin was not satisfactory so far.
