Article Synopsis
  • - Many bacteria have protective polysaccharide capsules made of long glycan chains, which can be free or attached to their outer membrane; the group 4 capsule in E. coli is produced by a specific gene operon.
  • - The GfcD protein, part of this operon, is believed to function as a channel for exporting lipid-anchored polysaccharide chains and has two predicted β-barrel domains that could serve as a lateral exit gate.
  • - A study using molecular dynamics showed that while the lateral aperture of GfcD remains stable, lipids do not enter the barrel, but lipid A successfully exits into the membrane, indicating how the capsule is exported.

Rho GTPases, master spatial regulators of a wide range of cellular processes, are orchestrated by complex formation with guanine nucleotide dissociation inhibitors (RhoGDIs). These have been thought to possess an unstructured N-terminus that inhibits nucleotide exchange of their client upon binding/folding. Via NMR analyses, molecular dynamics simulations, and biochemical assays, we reveal instead pertinent structural properties transiently maintained both, in the presence and absence of the client, imposed onto the terminus context-specifically by modulating interactions with the surface of the folded C-terminal domain.

Article Synopsis
  • Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are noncoding RNAs, and many have unknown biological functions due to challenges in studying them.
  • This study specifically investigated circTulp4, a circRNA found in the brain, by creating a mouse model that lacks circTulp4 while preserving normal mRNA and protein levels.
  • The findings show that circTulp4 is essential for proper brain function, influencing neurotransmission and responses to negative stimuli, highlighting the importance of circRNAs in neural regulation.

Despite the extensive development of microalgae biotechnology, it still requires new methodologies to lower production costs, especially in the field of biofuel production. Therefore, innovative methods that facilitate operations and enable cost-effective production are important in driving this industry. In this study, we propose a new low-cost and easy-to-use procedure, addressed to the generation of a culture medium for Scenedesmus acutus.

Article Synopsis
  • * Spain reported 33 cases of Shigella sonnei linked genetically to the UK strains, plus 4 cases with different strains but similar resistance.
  • * These findings indicate the presence of multiple genetic groups of multidrug-resistant Shigella sonnei circulating in Spain.*
