Article Synopsis
  • BoHV-1 is a major concern for the cattle industry due to its ability to remain dormant and reactivate during stressful conditions, leading to various health issues in cattle.
  • The virus primarily establishes latency in sensory neurons of the trigeminal ganglia and cells in the pharyngeal tonsils, with reactivation linked to reproductive issues, immune suppression, and pneumonia risk in young calves.
  • Key transcription factors, including the glucocorticoid receptor and KLF15, play crucial roles in initiating viral replication and reactivation from latency by interacting with the virus's genetic material.

Glucocorticoid receptor (GR) activation enhances Human alpha-herpes virus 1 (HSV-1) replication and explant-induced reactivation from latency. Furthermore, GR and Krüppel-like factor 15 (KLF15) cooperatively transactivate cis-regulatory modules (CRMs) that drive expression of infected cell protein 0 (ICP0), ICP4, and ICP27. KLF and specificity protein (Sp) family members bind GC-rich or C-rich sequences and belong to the same super-family of transcription factors.

Online tuning of particle accelerators is a complex optimisation problem that continues to require manual intervention by experienced human operators. Autonomous tuning is a rapidly expanding field of research, where learning-based methods like Bayesian optimisation (BO) hold great promise in improving plant performance and reducing tuning times. At the same time, reinforcement learning (RL) is a capable method of learning intelligent controllers, and recent work shows that RL can also be used to train domain-specialised optimisers in so-called reinforcement learning-trained optimisation (RLO).

Unlabelled: Bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) infection causes respiratory tract disorders and immune suppression and may induce bacterial pneumonia. BoHV-1 establishes lifelong latency in sensory neurons after acute infection. Reactivation from latency consistently occurs following stress or intravenous injection of the synthetic corticosteroid dexamethasone (DEX), which mimics stress.

Very high energy electrons (VHEE) are a potential candidate for radiotherapy applications. This includes tumours in inhomogeneous regions such as lung and prostate cancers, due to the insensitivity of VHEE to inhomogeneities. This study explores how electrons in the VHEE range can be used to perform successful in vitro radiobiological studies.
