Unlabelled: Subsequent fracture rates and associated mortality were compared before and after the introduction of fracture liaison service (FLS). In 100,198 women and men, FLS was associated with 13% and 10% lower risk of subsequent fragility fractures and 18% and 15% lower mortality. The study suggests that FLS may prevent fractures.

Article Synopsis
  • Fragility and insufficiency fractures of the pelvis and sacrum are on the rise among the elderly due to weakened bones, leading to persistent pain, reduced mobility, and a risk of loss of independence.
  • While conservative treatments are an option, surgery is often preferred for unstable fractures, especially since many patients do not receive adequate preventative care for osteoporosis-related fractures.
  • Diagnostic imaging is crucial for identifying these fractures, with CT scans being the gold standard, but MRI offers the highest sensitivity for detecting complex fractures, guiding treatment based on fracture type and stability.

Unlabelled: The current study investigated subsequent fracture risk following a forearm fracture in three country of birth categories: Norway, Europe and North America, and other countries. Subsequent fracture risk was modestly higher in Norwegian-born individuals compared to the two other groups. Secondary fracture prevention should be recommended regardless of country background.

Background: Operative treatment is widely used for acute proximal hamstring avulsions, but its effectiveness compared with that of nonoperative treatment has not been shown in randomized trials.

Methods: In this noninferiority trial at 10 centers in Sweden and Norway, we enrolled patients 30 to 70 years of age with a proximal hamstring avulsion in a randomized trial and a parallel observational cohort. Treatments were operative reinsertion of the tendons or nonoperative management.

Purpose: Despite the availability of clinical guidelines for hip fracture patients, adherence to these guidelines is challenging, potentially resulting in suboptimal patient care. The goal of this study was (1) to evaluate and benchmark the adherence to recently established quality indicators (QIs), and (2) to study clinical outcomes, in fragile hip fracture patients from different European countries.

Methods: This observational, cross-sectional multicenter study was performed in 10 hospitals from 9 European countries including data of 298 consecutive patients.
