Background: Even with the advent of nucleic acid (NA) amplification technologies the culture of mycobacteria for diagnostic and other applications remains of critical importance. Notably microscopic observed drug susceptibility testing (MODS), as opposed to traditional culture on solid media or automated liquid culture, has shown potential to both speed up and increase the provision of mycobacterial culture in high burden settings.
Methods: Here we explore the growth of Mycobacterial tuberculosis microcolonies, imaged by automated digital microscopy, cultured on a porous aluminium oxide (PAO) supports.
The upper airways are prone to contact with pathogenic as well as non-pathogenic microbes, therefore immune recognition principles have to be tightly controlled. Here we show that human BEAS-2B bronchial epithelial cells inhibited secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-alpha and IL-12 by monocytes, macrophages and dendritic cells. This inhibitory effect could be transferred by supernatant of resting BEAS-2B cells and was also observed when primary murine tracheal epithelial cells were prepared.

Oxygen treatment of horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase EE isozyme substituted with Cu(II) at the catalytic site leads to bleaching with concomitant reduction to Cu(I) of approximately 90% of total Cu(II). The Cu(II) of the remaining 'minor species' cannot be reduced nor does it interact with exogenous ligands, e.g.
