Objective: To compare the tolerance of flexible cystoscopy with topical anesthetic versus simple lubrication when the assigned lubricant is instilled 5 min before the exploration.
Material And Methods: A total of 185 consecutive patients were randomly assigned either to simple lubrication (Group 1) or to lidocaine hydrochloride gel (Group 2). Thirteen patients had some kind of difficulty during exploration (stenosis) that required additional manipulation or electrocoagulation for small relapses and were excluded from the final analysis, leaving 172 patients suitable for inclusion.
The existence of a vesical diverticulum in the context of a congenital connective tissue disorder such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome led us to consider the possibility of a relationship. Four types of diverticula can be found in the literature: congenital, acquired, iatrogenic and syndrome-associated. Within the later, Ehlers-Danlos syndromes type IV and IX, even type V, are associated to the existence of vesical diverticula.

All patients had a urethral obstructive process which resulted from a hyperplastic or carcinomatous prostatic disease for which open- or endoscopic-surgery was totally contraindicated due to the patients' general status as a result of major cardiorespiratory disorders. A literature review and an evaluation of both indications and contraindications for using such prothesis was made.
