Infectious keratitis after laser in situ keratomileusis: results of an ASCRS survey.

To investigate the incidence, culture results, treatment, and visual outcomes of infectious keratitis after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) worldwide, the Cornea Clinical Committee of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) contacted 8600 United States and international ASCRS members by e-mail and asked them to respond to a questionnaire about post-LASIK infectious keratitis. One hundred sixteen infections were reported by 56 LASIK surgeons who had performed an estimated 338 550 procedures. Seventy-six cases presented in the first week after surgery, 7 during the second week, 17 between the second and fourth weeks, and 16 after 1 month.

Tissue utilization at the Minnesota Lions' Eye Bank.

The purpose of this study was to examine the utilization of corneas procured by the Minnesota Lions' Eye Bank to determine why corneas were excluded from transplantation and to identify methods to safely increase the number of tissues made available for transplantation. We performed a retrospective review of the eye bank charts of 2,382 corneas evaluated by the Minnesota Lions' Eye Bank between December 1, 1992 and November 30, 1993. During that time 748 corneas (31%) were made available for transplantation; 1,597 (67%) were directed toward research or training.

Microbial keratitis in children.

In a five-year review, we identified 29 cases of microbial infection in 28 patients who were 16 years old or younger. Herpes simplex infections were excluded. Predisposing factors included trauma (ten cases, 34%), severe systemic illness (eight cases, 27%), contact lens use (seven cases, 24%), exposure keratopathy (seven cases, 24%), and previous ocular surgery (six cases, 21%).
