Background: Quiescence is reversible proliferative arrest. Multiple mechanisms regulate quiescence that are not fully understood. High expression of the CDK inhibitor p21 correlates with a poor prognosis in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and, in non-transformed cells, p21 promotes quiescence after replication stress.

Medical students from racially minoritized backgrounds receive negative evaluations more frequently, possibly from implicit bias. To determine if a preference for White applicants over Asian and Black applicants exists among resident and attending reviewers of obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) residency applications. In 2021, we sampled academic OB/GYN physicians from 6 academic institutions to randomly receive questionnaire form A or B, each containing 4 contrived Electronic Residency Application Service profiles stratified by United States Medical Licensing Examination scores; institutions attended; and strength of recommendation letters into top-, mid-, and low-tiers.

Article Synopsis
  • Diabetic bladder dysfunction (DBD) is a common complication in diabetes, presenting as overactive or underactive bladder symptoms, and while strict glucose control might help, it has not been fully supported by previous research.
  • A study was conducted using male Akita diabetic mice to see how different levels of glucose control (poor vs. strict) affected DBD and to explore the role of NLRP3-induced inflammation.
  • Results showed that better glucose control prevented signs of an underactive bladder, while NLRP3 deletion did not impact bladder function, indicating that regulated glucose levels are crucial in managing DBD.

Dry DMSO can rapidly pull water vapor out of the air due to its hygroscopic nature. This is a well-documented problem within drug discovery, particularly within high-throughput screening (HTS). This hydration is caused by atmospheric moisture being absorbed each time a compound library is used.

Objective: Compare the real-world impact of fidaxomicin (FDX) and vancomycin (VAN) on infection (CDI) recurrence in a high-risk patient population.

Design: A retrospective, matched-cohort study evaluating hospitalized patients with CDI from January 1, 2016, to November 1, 2022, within a tertiary academic medical center.

Patients: Adult patients with at least 1 prior CDI case who received either FDX or VAN for non-fulminant CDI while admitted, and had at least 1 additional risk factor for recurrence.
