Stability of the thromboxane B biomarker of low-dose aspirin pharmacodynamics in human whole blood and in long-term stored serum samples.

Background: Serum thromboxane B (sTXB) is a validated biomarker of low-dose aspirin pharmacodynamics. In the original method, nonanticoagulated blood samples must be incubated at 37 °C immediately after withdrawal, centrifuged and serum supernatant should be frozen until assayed. Timely completion of all preanalytical steps may affect the feasibility and quality of sTXB measurements.

The ongoing demographic, epidemiological and social changes are dramatically raising the clinical and care complexity of patients admitted to internal medicine (IM) departments. Collecting evidence for a better characterization of patients is crucial to tailor future interventions based on patient's real needs. The aim of this prospective multicenter study was to describe the complexity of care of patients hospitalized in IM by calculating the complexity of care (ICC) score, through the combination of clinical instability (NEWS score) and care dependency scales (mICD).

Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is a very common and troublesome gastrointestinal side effect following the use of opioids. Despite existing international guidelines, OIC is largely underdiagnosed and undertreated. ECHO OIC is a European project designed to improve the diagnosis and management of OIC at the primary care level.

Prevalence, risk factors and clinical impact of burnout in internal medicine units: a call to action.

Health workers, and in particular doctors and nurses working in internal medicine units (IMU), are at high risk of burnout. Overcrowding, complexity and severity of clinical cases, patients' social and family issues, impact of death, and "workload" are all aspects that are specific risk factors that might lead to the development of burnout in this scenario. People suffering from burnout may face several psychological problems (including extreme physical and mental fatigue, emotional exhaustion, loss of enthusiasm concerning work, feelings of cynicism, and a low sense of personal accomplishment) and are also at risk of developing some somatic diseases.
