Intravenous thrombolysis for ischemic stroke in the Veneto region: the gap between eligibility and reality.

Intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) is the treatment of choice for most patients with acute ischemic stroke. According to the recently updated guidelines, IVT should be administered in absence of absolute exclusion criteria. We aimed to assess the proportion of ischemic strokes potentially eligible and actually treated with IVT, and to explore the reasons for not administering IVT.

Low fat adiponectin expression is associated with oxidative stress in nondiabetic humans with chronic kidney disease--impact on plasma adiponectin concentration.

In spite of association between high plasma adiponectin and high metabolic and cardiovascular (CV) risk, highest adiponectin increments retain CV and metabolic protective effects in advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). Passive accumulation can favor CKD-associated hyperadiponectinemia but potential additional regulation by adipose tissue remains undefined. Oxidative stress (OS) is associated with metabolic and CV disease and with CKD [increasing from conservative treatment (CT) to maintenance hemodialysis (MHD)], and OS can reduce adiponectin expression in experimental models.

Syncoilin upregulation in muscle of patients with neuromuscular disease.

Syncoilin may have a role in linking the desmin-associated intermediate filament network of the muscle fiber with the dystrophin-associated protein complex (DAPC). We have evaluated syncoilin in a range of neuromuscular disorders including Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, central core disease, congenital muscular dystrophies, and neurogenic disorders. Our results show that syncoilin immunolabeling is not only altered in muscle fibers with alterations in the DAPC but also in response to a variety of genetic defects, including those associated with proteins of the extracellular matrix and the intracellular Ca2+-release channel (ryanodine receptor).

Factors affecting nutritional status, response to exercise, and progression of chronic rejection in kidney transplant recipients.

The nutritional status and the function of a renal graft are satisfactory in kidney transplantation patients who observe their dietary prescription. A reduction in maximal exercise test capacity in kidney transplant recipients are thought to be a consequence of uremic muscle dysfunction and also of changes in muscle structure associated with immunosuppressive therapy. Daily regular physical activity is recommended.

Quality of neurology residency programmes: an Italian survey.

In recent years there has been a growing interest in medical and particularly neurological education and how this should be related to the needs for patient care. To evaluate neurological training in Italy, we conducted a survey of the residency programmes aimed at different aspects of training. The survey was conducted in the 38 neurological Italian teaching hospitals and 27 of these answered.
