Objective: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is extremely common but frequently asymptomatic. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with contrast remains the gold standard for identifying TMJ arthritis in JIA. A reliable scoring system with published MRI examples of typical acute and chronic TMJ arthritis changes will be invaluable for future prospective treatment trials of TMJ arthritis in JIA.

As a model for molecular mimicry in neurological disease, we study people infected with human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) who develop HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), an immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system (CNS). In HAM/TSP, data suggests molecular mimicry is the result of cross-reactive antibodies between HTLV-1-tax and heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A1 (hnRNP A1), a protein over-expressed in human CNS neurons. The hnRNP A1 epitope recognized by autoantibodies was unknown.

The generation of new cells in the adult mammalian brain may significantly modify pathophysiological processes in neuropsychiatric disorders. We examined the ability of chronic treatment with the antipsychotic drugs (APDs) olanzapine and haloperidol to increase the number and survival of newly generated cells in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and striatal complex of adult male rats. Animals were treated with olanzapine or haloperidol for 3 weeks and then injected with 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) to label mitotic cells.
