Purpose: The burden of critical COVID-19 patients in intensive care units (ICU) demands new tools to stratify patient risk. We aimed to investigate the role of cardiac and lung ultrasound, together with clinical variables, to propose a simple score to help predict short-term mortality in these patients.
Material And Methods: We collected clinical and laboratorial data, and a point-of-care cardiac and lung ultrasound was performed in the first 36 h of admission in the ICU.
Guard cells on the leaf epidermis regulate stomatal opening for gas exchange between plants and the atmosphere, allowing a balance between photosynthesis and transpiration. Given that guard cells possess several characteristics of sink tissues, their metabolic activities should largely depend on mesophyll-derived sugars. Early biochemical studies revealed sugar uptake into guard cells.

In this context, lipid monolayers are a powerful tool to particularly study the influence of lipid packing on the behavior of membrane proteins. Here, monolayers deposited in miniaturized fixed area-chambers, which require only minute amounts of protein, were used and shown to faithfully reproduce the characteristics of Langmuir monolayers.

Objectives: To evaluate spontaneous blood pressure and heart rate variability and spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity before and after brain death.
Methods: Spontaneous variability of arterial blood pressure and heart rate-estimated by power spectra of systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and pulse interval (PI)-and spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity (BRS)-estimated by the alpha index and the sequence technique-were evaluated in 11 patients twice: shortly before and 1 hour after the onset of brain death.
Results: Significant spectral changes occurred after brain death: a general power reduction in PI spectra; a shift of SBP, DBP and PI powers toward the lower frequencies, resulting in a greater slope of the "1/f" spectral trends; and a marked reduction of SBP and DBP powers (-93%) and of SBP-PI coherence (-63%) at 0.
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) has two enzymatically active domains: a C-domain in the carboxy terminal region and an N-domain in the amino terminal region. We based the pharmacologic characterization of these sites on the rat testis-lung model. In testis, only a truncate form of ACE is present (C-site), whereas both N- and C-sites are present in lung.
