Article Synopsis
  • - Commutable secondary certified reference materials (CRMs) are crucial for ensuring consistent results in medical lab tests, highlighting the need for their sustainable availability.
  • - The IFCC Working Group has released recommendations for assessing the commutability of these CRMs, although detailed studies can strain resources for producers.
  • - A new equivalence assessment method allows for comparing replacement CRMs with established ones, potentially reducing resource needs while ensuring reliability through the inclusion of representative clinical samples.

Summary: Assessment of hormone concentrations can be subjected to laboratory pitfalls. Macro-hormones are hormone-autoantibody complexes which are cleared slowly from circulation and cause a false elevation in hormones' concentrations. Macro-prolactin and macro-thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) are most frequently encountered while macro-follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) has been rarely reported.

Dyslipidemia is one of the most important risk factors for the development of atherosclerotic disease and its control, through well-proven therapies, allows an optimal risk management over time. LDL-cholesterol targets are well defined by international guidelines and based on individual cardiovascular risk. As guidelines evolve, also laboratory reports need to do the same, including lipid reference values by cardiovascular risk classes, to avoid misunderstandings and inappropriate lipid-lowering therapy withdrawal.

This study assessed humoral and T cell-mediated immune responses to the BNT162b2 vaccine in orthotopic liver transplant (OLT) and lung transplant (LUT) recipients who received three doses of the vaccine from March 2021 at our institution. Serum samples were collected 60 days post-second and third dose to quantify antibodies against the spike region of SARS-CoV-2 while whole blood samples were collected to analyze the SARS-CoV-2-specific T-cell response using an IFN-γ ELISpot assay. We enrolled 244 OLT and 120 LUT recipients.
