The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a biological process in which epithelial cells change into mesenchymal cells with fibroblast-like characteristics. EMT plays a crucial role in the progression of fibrosis. Classical inducers associated with the maintenance of EMT, such as TGF-β1, have become targets of several anti-EMT therapeutic strategies.

From the end of 2019, a great battle began by the world scientific community against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that caused COVID-19, a pathology that generated devastating consequences on all existing continents. Several mutations have already been detected in the structure of the virus, which have been responsible for the generation of many types of variants since the detection of the first COVID-19 virus identified in China.

Here, we present a detailed reactivity and mechanistic study pioneering discrete {ZrO} clusters, which are commonly employed as building blocks for Zr-MOFs and as non-classical soluble coordination compounds for the degradation of PTs using the pesticide ethyl paraoxon as a model. Combined computational studies, mechanistic experiments, and EXAFS analysis show that the reactivity of these clusters arises from their Zr-Zr bimetallic sites, which hydrolyze ethyl paraoxon under acidic conditions through an intramolecular pathway.
