Expression and alpha1-adrenoceptor regulation of caldesmon in human prostate smooth muscle.

Objective: To investigate expression and α1-adrenergic regulation of caldesmon in the human prostate. Caldesmon is an important mediator and regulator of contraction in different smooth muscle types. However, this has not been investigated in the prostate to date.

[Establishment of T3 (T4) in the TNM classification of lung cancer].

The diagnosis of T3 (T4) extension of a lung tumor according to the TNM classification system means that the patient has reached stage 3 with a very poor prognosis. To establish the exact extent of a tumor standard chest X-rays, tomograms and even CT scan may not suffice, and, depending on the situation, endoscopy, ultrasonography, NMR or diagnostic pneumothorax should be employed. Extension T4, corresponding to malignant pleural effusion, which has been added recently (1987) to the UICC classification, may require thoracocentesis, pleural biopsy or even pleuroscopy.

[Comparative study of the effects of regular or on-demand salbutamol inhalation in the treatment of asthma].

52 asthmatic patients aged 18 to 70 years took part in a double-blind crossover trial comparing the effects of regular treatment of asthma with inhaled salbutamol (400 micrograms qds) versus irregular treatment (400 micrograms prn), each prescribed for 4 weeks. There were no differences between the two schedules regarding intensity of clinical symptoms, morning and evening values of peak expiratory flow rates and spirometric measurements. The mean daily consumption of salbutamol was higher in the period of regular treatment (2148 +/- 548 micrograms) than in the period of free treatment (800 +/- 700 micrograms).
