Seasonal snow in the extratropical Andes is a primary water source for major rivers supplying water for drinking, agriculture, and hydroelectric power in Central Chile. Here, we used estimates from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to analyze changes in snow cover extent over the period 2001-2022 in a total of 18 watersheds spanning approximately 1,100 km across the Chilean Andes (27-36°S). We found that the annual snow cover extent is receding in the watersheds analyzed at an average pace of approximately 19% per decade.

Kainate receptors play an important role in the central nervous system by mediating postsynaptic excitatory neurotransmission and modulating the release of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA through a presynaptic mechanism. To date, only three structures of the ligand-binding domain (LBD) of the kainate receptor subunit GluK1 in complex with positive allosteric modulators have been determined by X-ray crystallography, all belonging to class II modulators. Here, we report a high-resolution structure of GluK1-LBD in complex with kainate and BPAM538, which belongs to the full-spanning class III.

Diego Rivera, an acclaimed Mexican painter active during the first half of the 20th century, painted multiple frescoes in Mexico and the United States. Some include depictions of bacteria, their interactions with human hosts, and processes related to microbiology and public health, including the microbial origin of life, diagnosis of infection, vaccine production, and immunization. Microbiological subjects in Rivera's murals at the Mexican Ministry of Health in Mexico City; the Detroit Institute of Art, Detroit; Rockefeller Center, New York/Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City; Chapultepec Park, Mexico City; and the Institute of Social Security, Mexico City, span almost 25 years, from 1929 to 1953.

Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) is a quasi-non-destructive technique capable of analyzing the outer monolayers of a solid sample and detecting all elements of the periodic table and their isotopes. Its ability to analyze the outer monolayers resides in sputtering the sample surface with a low-dose primary ion gun, which, in turn, imposes the use of a detector capable of counting a single ion at a time. Consequently, the detector saturates when more than one ion arrives at the same time hindering the use of TOF-SIMS for quantification purposes such as isotope ratio estimation.
