In recent years, antimicrobial activities of essential oils have been intensively explored, mainly in researching and developing new antimicrobial agents to overcome microbial resistance. The present study investigates the chemical composition and antimicrobial activities of essential oils obtained from two Asteraceae: Asteriscus graveolens (Forssk.) Less.

Biological risk management in public health focuses on the impact of outbreaks on health, the economy, and other systems and on ensuring biosafety and biosecurity. To address this broad range of risks, the International Health Regulations (IHR, 2005) request that all member states build defined core capacities, risk communication being one of them. While there is existing guidance on the communication process and on what health authorities need to consider to design risk communication strategies that meet the requirements on a governance level, little has been done on implementation because of a number of factors, including lack of resources (human, financial, and others) and systems to support effective and consistent capacity for risk communication.

This study investigated the source of infection and strain relatedness of Aspergillus fumigatus isolates from bronchial colonisation and invasive aspergillosis (IA) in four transplant patients. Environmental isolates from the patient's home and from the hospital and infecting isolates were obtained for patient A who developed IA. Clinic environmental and colonising isolates were obtained for patient B.

Sections of beef longissimus lumborum from four animals were held after 1 hr post mortem at either 0 ° (cold-shortened) or at 15 °C (controls). After 24 hr, the levels of μ- and m-calpains were the same in both treatments and about 30% and 85% of their initial levels respectively. The level of calpastatin at 24 h was higher in cold-shortened (100%) than in controls (60% of its initial level).

A PCR method was developed to identify and fingerprint Candida krusei isolates simply and rapidly. The primer pair Arno1 and Arno2 was designed to amplify the polymorphic species-specific repetitive sequence CKRS-1 (C. krusei repeated sequence 1) that we identified in the nontranscribed intergenic regions (IGRs) of rRNA genes in C.
