Enhanced Depth Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography of Optic Nerve Head Drusen in Children.

Background: To assess the utility of enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT), compared with other conventional imaging modalities, for detecting and characterizing optic nerve head drusen (ONHD) in children.

Methods: We report a retrospective cross-sectional case series of consecutive pediatric patients (age ≤16 years) with ONHD confirmed using B-scan ultrasonography. All eyes were evaluated using spectral-domain OCT of the optic nerve head in conventional (non-EDI) and EDI modes, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), and standard automated perimetry.

Bacterial flora on slit lamps.

The slit lamp can be a source of cross infection in the clinic setting. We identified the bacteria flora on slit lamps and determined the risk of transmission to patients. Frequent cleaning of the slit lamp especially after treating infected cases can decrease the transmission of organisms.

Central retinal vein occlusion secondary to protein S deficiency.

We present a case of protein S deficiency causing central retinal vein occlusion treated with anticoagulation, which includes heparin followed by oral warfarin therapy. This article highlights the importance of looking for other possible causes of central retinal vein occlusion, especially in younger patients with negative initial investigations.

Descemetocoele from exposure keratopathy.

We present a case of descemetocoele secondary to facial nerve palsy causing exposure keratopathy. To prevent further ocular morbidity, a central tarsorrhaphy was performed. On follow-up two weeks later, no further deterioration of the eye was detected.
