Cirrhosis is a frequent and severe condition, which is the late stage of numerous chronic liver diseases. It is associated with major hemodynamic alterations characteristic of hyperdynamic circulation and with a series of structural, functional, electrophysiological and biological heart abnormalities termed cirrhotic cardiomyopathy. The pathogenesis of this syndrome is multifactorial.

The authors report the case of a 27-year-old Madagascan HIV seronegative patient, who developed a pericardial effusion when coming back from a long stay in Madagascar. An anti-inflammatory treatment and then a probabilistic antibiotic treatment were ineffective, and at the same time echocardiographic signs of tamponade appeared.

The prevalence of several conventional risk factors is high in spondyloarthropathy patients, and chronic inflammation also contributes to premature plaque formation. In addition, susceptibility genes for spondyloarthropathies may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
