The emission of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from wastewater treatment plants has been extensively studied; however, less attention has been paid to municipal solid waste treatment plants (MSWTPs), which can also be a potential source for CECs into surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) ecosystems. In this work, the environmental impact of a MSWTP located in the province of Castelló, Spain, was studied along a period of ten years (from 2012 to 2022). A total of 173 water samples (including SW and GW) collected from the surrounding of this plant were monitored for 93 compounds (pharmaceuticals and pesticides) by using liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry with triple quadrupole.

Methotrexate (MTX) is a commonly used disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD), but its mechanism has not been fully established. In 47 new-onset DMARD-naïve RA patients, we investigated the pattern of IFNγ, IL-4 and IL-17A expression by naïve (T), central (T), effector memory (T) and effector (T) CD4 subsets; their STAT-1, STAT-6 and STAT-3 transcription factors phosphorylation, and the circulating levels of IFNγ, IL-4 and IL-17.

These patients show heterogeneous clinical response to methotrexate (MTX) treatment. We have examined the count of circulating CD4+ T-lymphocytes, and their naïve (T), central memory (T), effector memory (T) and effector (T) subsets, CD28 expression and Vβ TCR repertoire distribution by polychromatic flow cytometry in a population of 68 DMARD-naïve recently diagnosed RA patients, before and after 3 and 6 months of MTX treatment.

However, emergency medical dispatchers (EMDs) recognize stroke in less than half of 9-1-1 calls, potentially due to the words used by callers to communicate stroke signs and symptoms. We hypothesized that callers do not typically use words and phrases considered to be classical descriptors of stroke, such as focal neurologic deficits, but that a mixed-methods approach can identify words and phrases commonly used by 9-1-1 callers to describe acute stroke victims.

In this plant, all urban solid wastes from the town of Castellón (around 200,000 inhabitants) and other smaller towns as Almassora, Benicàssim, Betxí, Borriana, L'Alcora, Onda and Vila-Real are treated. In order to evaluate the potential impact of this plant on the surrounding water, both surface and groundwater, a comprehensive monitoring of organic pollutants has been carried out along 2011, 2012 and 2013.
