Article Synopsis
  • The implementation of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 resulted in a list of approved health claims for food supplements, but many plant-based supplements lack claims on this list despite their traditional uses.
  • Synadiet has created a three-grade model (A, B, C) to classify the scientific evidence for health claims related to plants, illustrated by assessing red clover isoflavones' effect on blood lipids in postmenopausal women, which received a Grade B rating.
  • If widely adopted in Europe, this model could support the establishment of a positive list of health claims specifically for plant preparations.

Middle-aged subjects were randomized to take synbiotic (Bifidobacterium animalis lactis and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS)) or placebo for 30 days.
