Animals suffer hypoxia when their oxygen consumption is larger than the oxygen available. Hypoxia affects the white shrimp Penaeus (Litopenaeus) vannamei, both in their natural habitat and in cultivation farms. Shrimp regulates some enzymes that participate in energy production pathways as a strategy to survive during hypoxia.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOmmochromes are pigments of invertebrates that exhibit oxidative stress protection. The aim of this study was to investigate ommochromes extracted from cephalopod's skin for their ability to inhibit age-related-macular degeneration (AMD)-related factors such as HO-induced and iron-dependent oxidative stress (ferroptosis and erastin), accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), as well as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and inflammatory cytokines (interleukin 6 and interleukin 8) secretion. As cell systems, we used primary porcine retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), human retinal pigment epithelium cell line ARPE-19 and uveal melanoma cell line OMM-1.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFCephalopods, in particular octopus (), have the ability to alter their appearance or body pattern by showing a wide range of camouflage by virtue of their chromatophores, which contain nanostructured granules of ommochrome pigments. Recently, the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of ommochromes have become of great interest; therefore, in this study, the pH-dependent redox effect of the extraction solvent on the antioxidant potential and the structural characterization of the pigments were evaluated. Cell viability was determined by the microdilution method in broth by turbidity, MTT, resazurin, as well as fluorescence microscopy kit assays.

Crude extracts of collagenases from jumbo squid () hepatopancreas and sierra fish () viscera were used to hydrolyse squid muscle collagen into peptides with inhibitory capacity over angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) and ABTS free radicals [2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)], as a measure of their antihypertensive potential and antioxidant activity, respectively. Proteins from 20 to 200 kDa were found in both enzyme extracts; however, in comparison to the jumbo squid extract (JSE), the extraction yield and specific activity of the enzymatic sierra fish extract (SFE) were ≈ 40% greater, suggesting the presence of enzymes with different collagenolytic activity. Moreover, the utilised collagen was obtained with a yield of 0.

Cancer is a noncommunicable disease of rising worldwide concern. Marine food products such as Octopus vulgaris ink (OI) could be sources of compounds addressing these concerns. This study aimed to evaluate the antimutagenic, cytoprotective, antiproliferative, proapoptotic, and antioxidant capacity of OI extracts on human cancer cell lines (22Rv1, HeLa, A549).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFJumbo squid () is one of the largest cephalopods, and represents an important economic fishery in several regions of the Pacific Ocean, from southern California in the United States to southern Chile. Large and considerable discards of this species, such as skin, have been reported to constitute an important source of potential by-products. In this paper, a shotgun proteomics approach was applied for the first time to the characterization of the jumbo squid () skin proteome.

The cell cycle comprises a series of steps necessary for cell growth until cell division. The participation of proteins responsible for cell cycle regulation, known as cyclin dependent kinases or Cdks, is necessary for cycle progression. Cyclin dependent kinase 2 (Cdk-2) is one of the most studied Cdks.

The arms collagen presented the highest temperature (Tp) and enthalpy of transition. The arms collagen thermic properties may be explained by the higher imino amino acid content, proline and lysine hydroxylation degrees.

However, it has been observed that colloidal systems formed from squid proteins have limited stability. Therefore, the isolation and characterization of the actomyosin-paramyosin isolated (API) complex were performed, because they are the main proteins to which functionality has been attributed.

An integral evaluation of the effects of ferulic acid on biomarkers of glucose dysregulation, dyslipidemia, inflammation, and antioxidant potential induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) in rats was carried out. Three groups of male Wistar rats (six per group) consumed a basal diet (BD), which was supplemented with either lard at 310 g/kg (HFD) or lard and ferulic acid at 2 g/kg (HFD + FA), ad libitum for eight weeks.

In marine organisms primarily intended for human consumption, the quality of the muscle and the extracted oils may be affected by lipid oxidation during storage, even at low temperatures. This has led to a search for alternatives to maintain quality. In this sense, antioxidant compounds have been used to prevent such lipid deterioration.

Solid wastes generated from the seafood industry represent an important environmental pollutant; therefore, utilization of those wastes for the development of processing biochemical tools could be an attractive and clean solution for the seafood industry. This study reports the immobilization of semi-purified acidic proteases from Monterey sardine stomachs onto chitin and chitosan materials extracted from shrimp head waste. Several supports (chitosan beads, chitosan flakes, and partially deacetylated flakes) were activated either with genipin or Na-tripolyphosphate and evaluated as a mean to immobilize acidic proteases.

The control of micro-organisms responsible for pre- and postharvest diseases of agricultural products, mainly viruses and fungi, is a problem that remains unresolved, together with the environmental impact of the excessive use of chemicals to tackle this problem. Current efforts are focused on the search for efficient alternatives for microbial control that will not result in damage to the environment or an imbalance in the existing biota. One alternative is the use of natural antimicrobial compounds such as chitosan, a linear cationic biopolymer, which is biodegradable, biocompatible and non-toxic, has filmogenic properties and is capable of forming matrices for the transport of active substances.

A chloroform extract obtained from octopus tentacles was sequentially fractionated using thin layer chromatography (TLC), and each fraction was tested for antimutagenic and antiproliferative activities. Organic extract reduced the number of revertants caused by aflatoxin B(1) showing a dose-response type of relationship.

The obtained blend films were resistant; however, a reduction in the mechanical resistance was observed as chitosan concentration increased. The thermal stability of the films showed a certain grade of interaction between polymers as seen in FTIR spectra.
