The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical course of masticatory function recovery following an endoscopic-assisted open reduction and internal fixation (EAORIF) procedure. Patients with a unilateral mandibular condylar fracture who underwent EAORIF for therapeutic purposes were evaluated, with comparisons made between those who underwent the procedure for base or neck fractures. At each time point analyzed after treatment, the occlusal contact area and maximum bite force in patients with a base fracture were greater, although the differences between the groups were not significant.

Article Synopsis
  • In familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) patients, fundic gland polyps (FGPs) are thought to increase the risk of gastric neoplasms, and this study explored how the distribution of these polyps relates to cancer development.
  • A review of 195 FAP patients showed that those with a wider distribution of FGPs (classified from P0 to P4) had a higher likelihood of developing gastric neoplasms, particularly in those who were Helicobacter pylori-negative.
  • The study concluded that the pattern of FGP distribution is significantly linked to gastric neoplasm risk in FAP patients, with the most severe distribution (P4) indicating the highest risk.

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) patients develop various life-threatening extracolonic comorbidities that appear individually or within a family. This diversity can be explained by the localization of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) variant, but few reports provide definitive findings about genotype-phenotype correlations. Therefore, we investigated FAP patients and the association between the severe phenotypes and APC variants.

We have been developing a light-weight X-ray telescope using micro electro mechanical systems technologies for future space missions. Micropores of 20 µm width are formed in a 4-inch Si wafer with deep reactive ion etching, and their sidewalls are used as X-ray reflection mirrors. The flatness of the sidewall is an important factor to determine the imaging performance, angular resolution.

Background And Aims: Multiple developments of squamous dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the upper aerodigestive tract have been explained by field cancerization phenomenon and were associated with alcohol and cigarette use. Second primary SCC development after curative treatment impairs patients' quality of life and survival; however, how these consumption and cessation affect field cancerization is still unknown.

Methods: This is a multicenter cohort study including 331 patients with superficial esophageal SCC (ESCC) treated endoscopically and pooled data from 1022 healthy subjects for comparison.

Octacalcium phosphate and collagen composite (OCPcol) promotes osteogenic differentiation and angiogenesis, thereby enhancing bone regeneration. Although a newly developed freeze-dried composite of OCPcol and teriparatide (OCPcolTPTD) reinforced bone regeneration more than OCPcol, the mechanism of bone regeneration remains unresolved. In this study, disks containing OCPcolTPTD, OCPcol, or β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) col were inserted into rodents with calvarial bone defects, before euthanasia 4 weeks later.

Background And Aims: Gastric neoplasms in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) occur at a high rate and can cause death. The endoscopic findings of gastric neoplasms in these patients are characteristic but not well recognized. To identify the relevant characteristics to enable early detection, we retrospectively investigated endoscopic findings of gastric neoplasms in patients with FAP and then compared the clinical, histopathologic, and genetic features among subgroups.

Background: The only established treatment for preventing colorectal cancer in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is colectomy, which greatly reduces patient quality of life. Thus, an alternative method is warranted. In this trial, we aimed to clarify the individual and joint effects of low-dose aspirin and mesalazine on the recurrence of colorectal polyps in Japanese patients with FAP.

Background: Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is reportedly the reliable modality to predict the depth of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), however, most previous studies are retrospective or single-centered. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic ability of conventional endoscopy and EUS using the data from a multicenter prospective study of endoscopic resection (ER) followed by chemoradiotherapy for cSM1-2N0M0 ESCC (JCOG0508).

Methods: All lesions were evaluated as cSM cancer with both conventional endoscopy and EUS before enrollment and judged as cSM1 or cSM2 in real time.

A simple bone cyst (SBC) is an intrabone cavity without epithelial lining, which occasionally occur with fibrous-osseous lesions. The imaging finding of the scalloped border and conserving the lamina dura, periodontal ligament spaces, or follicular spaces are considered radiographically pathognomonic of SBC. SBC has been reported to occur with fibrous-osseous lesions, including cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD).

Octacalcium phosphate and collagen composite (OCPcol) demonstrated superior bone regeneration and has been commercialized recently in Japan. Teriparatide (TPTD) is a bioactive recombinant form of parathyroid hormone that is approved for osteoporosis treatment. Because mandibular bone reconstruction after segmental resection is a key clinical problem, it was examined whether single-dose local administration of OCPcol with TPTD can affect recovery after this procedure.

Silicon micropore optics using deep reactive ion etching of silicon wafers has been being developed for future x-ray astronomy missions. Sidewalls of the micropores through a thin wafer with a typical thickness of hundreds of micrometers and a pore width of ∼20  μm are used for x-ray mirrors. However, burr structures observed after etching with a typical height of a few micrometers at the micropore edges are known to significantly reduce x-ray reflectivity.

Mesalazine is the gold standard drug for treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). Here, we describe 4 cases of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) patients with UC that showed reduction of intestinal polyp diameter by mesalazine treatment. Of note, the effects of mesalazine on the development of intestinal polyps in FAP patients have not been reported, and we further investigated whether the short-term use of high-dose mesalazine (4 g/day) has harmful effects on FAP patients or not.

Article Synopsis
  • Esophagectomy is the standard treatment for stage I esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), but this study explored the efficacy and safety of a minimally invasive alternative combining endoscopic resection and selective chemoradiotherapy (CRT).
  • A total of 176 patients were categorized based on their tumor characteristics into three groups, with the primary focus on measuring the 3-year overall survival rates for patients receiving prophylactic CRT and the results showed high survival rates.
  • The findings confirm that the combination of endoscopic resection and selective CRT is an effective treatment option for early-stage ESCC, potentially offering a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery.

Endoscopic treatments, including endoscopic mucosal resection or endoscopic submucosal dissection, are well accepted as standard treatments for early gastric cancers. However, there are few studies evaluating the safety and efficacy of this approach for early gastric cancers in patients aged over 80 years, and the post-treatment prognosis remains unclear. Here, we retrospectively analyzed the medical records and evaluated the safety and efficacy of endoscopic treatment for early gastric cancers in patients aged over 80 years (group A) compared with non-elderly patients aged 65-79 years (group B) and under 65 years (group C).
