The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in clinical settings has become a significant global concern. Among these bacteria, stands out due to its remarkable ability to acquire resistance genes and persist in hospital environments, leading to some of the most challenging infections. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) plays a crucial role in the evolution of this pathogen.

Antimicrobial resistance is considered one of the most critical threat for both human and animal health. Recently, reports of infection or colonization by carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales in companion animals had been described. This study report the first molecular characterization of NDM-producing Enterobacterales causing infections in companion animals from Argentina.

Unlabelled: Ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA) therapy has significantly improved survival rates for patients infected by carbapenem-resistant bacteria, including KPC producers. However, resistance to CZA is a growing concern, attributed to multiple mechanisms. In this study, we characterized four clinical CZA-resistant isolates obtained between July 2019 and December 2020.

The first cases of in Argentina were detected in three (Pre) recovered from two hospitals in Buenos Aires city in 2013. The isolates were genetically related, but the plasmid profile was different. Here, we characterized the -harboring plasmids of the first three cases detected in Argentina.

Background: The global spread of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales has become an epidemiological risk for healthcare systems by limiting available antimicrobial treatments. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened this scenario, prompting the emergence of extremely resistant microorganisms.

Methods: Between March 2020 and September 2021, the NRL confirmed 82 clinical Enterobacterales isolates harboring a combination of and MBL genes.

A ceftazidime-avibactam-resistant KPC-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain was isolated in Argentina from a tracheal aspirate. The patient was treated with ceftazidime-avibactam in combination with other agents for 130 days. Whole-genome sequencing of P.

Escherichia coli is one of the main human pathogens causing different hospital- and community-acquired infections. During the period from January 2013 to March 2015, 1.96% (32/1632) of E.

An increasing number of untreatable infections are recorded every year. Many studies have focused their efforts on developing new β-lactamase inhibitors to treat multi-drug resistant (MDR) isolates. In the present study, sulbactam/avibactam and sulbactam/relebactam combination were tested against 187 multi-drug resistant (MDR) clinical isolates; both sulbactam/avibactam and sulbactam/relebactam restored sulbactam activity.

CLSI and EUCAST recommend that only broth microdilution (BMD) should be used for routine colistin susceptibility testing; however, this technique can be difficult to perform in resource-poor settings. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of a colistin agar spot test (COL-AS) and a colistin drop test (COL-DT) compared to BMD. COL-AS and COL-DT were assessed with a collection of 271 Gram-negative bacilli clinical isolates: 195 (including 63 positive strains), 37 spp.

Objective: To describe the resistance profile and the genetic characteristics of Escherichia coli isolates that harbor the mobilizable colistin resistance gene mcr-1 in Argentina.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of 192 E. coli isolates positive for mcr-1 obtained from 69 hospitals of Buenos Aires City and 14 Argentinean provinces in 2012 - 2018.

The extensively drug-resistant NDM-1-producing Klebsiella quasipneumoniae subsp. quasipneumoniae M17277 (Kqsq-M17277) was only susceptible to colistin and fosfomycin. Whole genome sequencing of Kqsq-M17277 was performed through Illumina (short reads) and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (long reads).

Objectives: Multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli isolates recovered from food-producing animals are a global public-health concern, especially those with transferable mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance such as extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and mcr-1 genes. Here we report for the first time E. coli recovered from diarrhoeic and healthy pigs harbouring bla and/or mcr-1 from Argentinean farms.

Article Synopsis
  • * Whole-genome sequencing revealed 16 resistance genes, including the significant ones bla and mcr-1.5.
  • * This case is notable as it represents the first documented occurrence of these two resistance genes together in a clinical isolate of the Citrobacter species. *

The predominance of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing K. pneumoniae was caused by the spread of ST258 clone. In Latin America, KPC was reported in 2006, with the isolation of genetically unrelated K.

We have characterized nine mcr-1-harboring plasmids from clinical Escherichia coli isolates previously described in Argentina and Canada. Three of these plasmids carried a mcr-1-variant called here mcr-1.5.

This first nationwide study was conducted to analyze the prevalence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes in phenotypically unselected (consecutive) clinical enterobacteria. We studied 1,058 isolates that had been consecutively collected in 66 hospitals of the WHONET-Argentina Resistance Surveillance Network. Overall, 26% of isolates were nonsusceptible to at least one of the three quinolones tested (nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin).

Accurate detection of carbapenemase-producing Gram-negative bacilli is of utmost importance for the control of nosocomial spread and the initiation of appropriate antimicrobial therapy. The modified Hodge test (MHT), a carbapenem inactivation assay, has shown poor sensitivity in detecting the worldwide spread of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM). Recent studies demonstrated that NDM is a lipoprotein anchored to the outer membrane in Gram-negative bacteria, unlike all other known carbapenemases.
