Increasing microplastics pollution: An emerging vector for potentially pathogenic bacteria in the environment.

Microplastics (MP), plastic particles <5 mm, are of global concern due to their worldwide distribution and potential repercussions on ecosystems and human well-being. In this study, MP were collected from the urbanized Susurluk basin in Türkiye to evaluate their vector function for bacterial biofilms, both in the wet and dry seasons. Bacterial biofilms were predominantly found on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS), which constitute the most common MP types in the region.

Postoperative analgesic effect of lumbar erector spinae plane block for developmental hip dysplasia surgery: a randomized controlled double-blind study.

Open surgery for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) may cause severe pain due to tenotomies and pelvic-femoral osteotomies. This study aims to evaluate the analgesic effect of ultrasound-guided Lumbar Erector Spina Plane (L-ESP) Block in pediatric patients undergoing DDH surgery. Sixty children scheduled for DDH surgery were randomly assigned into two groups.

Efficacy and safety of gene therapy with onasemnogene abeparvovec in children with spinal muscular atrophy in the D-A-CH-region: a population-based observational study.

Background: Real-world data on gene addition therapy (GAT) with onasemnogene abeparvovec (OA), including all age groups and with or without symptoms of the disease before treatment are needed to provide families with evidence-based advice and realistic therapeutic goals. Aim of this study is therefore a population-based analysis of all patients with SMA treated with OA across Germany, Austria and Switzerland (D-A-CH).

Methods: This observational study included individuals with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) treated with OA in 29 specialized neuromuscular centers in the D-A-CH-region.

Plastic pollution has emerged as a significant environmental challenge worldwide, posing serious threats to ecosystems and human health. This study seeks to explore the interplay among circularity, sustainability, and the release of microplastics within the freshwater ecosystems situated along the western Black Sea coast- Düzce, Türkiye. Employing a multidisciplinary approach that integrates environmental science, economics, and policy analysis, the research examines the current state of plastic pollution in the region, considering diverse land uses and socio-economic lifestyles.

Factors Associated with Increasing Costs in Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Exacerbation: Turkish Thoracic Society Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Assembly.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that is the third leading cause of death in the world is one of the main economic burden. The cost is primarily due to COPD exacerbations and hospitalizations. We aimed to determine the factors associated with increasing costs in severe COPD exacerbation.

Effectiveness of a Sellar Reconstruction Algorithm in Transsphenoidal Pituitary Surgery: Insights from 490 Cases.

Background: Rhinorrhea is a common complication after endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal pituitary surgery (EETPS). This study evaluates the effectiveness of our sellar reconstruction technique in preventing rhinorrhea.

Methods: From June 2020 to March 2024, a surgical team performed 490 EETPS procedures on 458 pituitary adenoma patients.

Objective: Horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis (HGPPS) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder resulting from axonal midline crossing defect due to variants in ROBO3.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated demographics, clinical phenotype, course of spinal deformities, and neuroimaging findings of six Turkish patients with HGPPS. We performed targeted gene testing by next-generation sequencing.

Certolizumab Has Favorable Efficacy on Preventing Pancreas and Target Organs Damage in Acute Pancreatitis.

Objective: It was targeted to assess the efficacy of certolizumab on pancreas and target organs via biochemical parameters and histopathologic scores in experimental acute pancreatitis (AP).

Materials And Methods: Forty male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into the following 5 equal groups: group 1 (sham group), group 2 (AP group), group 3 (AP + low-dose certolizumab group), group 4 (AP + high-dose certolizumab group), and group 5 (placebo group). Rats in all groups were sacrificed 24 hours after the last injection and amylase, tumor necrosis factor α, transforming growth factor β, interleukin 1β, malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase levels were studied in blood samples.

Anatomical Parameters of Percutaneous, Minimally Invasive, Direct Intralaminar Pars Screw Fixation of Spondylolysis.

Objective: To investigate the anatomical parameters of the ideal screw trajectory for percutaneous intralaminar screw fixation of a pars defect in lumbar spondylolysis using computed tomography scans.

Methods: Using advanced radiological software, the ideal intralaminar screw trajectory was determined. The anatomical parameters of this trajectory were analyzed using a total of 80 single-level lumbar tomography scans in patients with spondylolysis at the lumbar 4 vertebrae and lumbar 5 vertebrae levels.

Efficacy of Agmatine Treatment in Experimental Acute Pancreatitis Rat Model.

Background/aims: Acute pancreatitis which is characterized by pancreatic inflammation can sometimes be difficult to treat because of limited therapeutic options. The purpose of the study was to assess the effects of agmatine in the acute pancreatitis experimental rat model.

Materials And Methods: An acute pancreatitis model was created with the administration of cerulein in 40 female Sprague-Dawley rats.

Entomopathogenic fungi with biological control potential against poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae, Arachnida: Dermanyssidae).

The poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (Arachnida: Dermanyssidae) is a pest that causes significant economic loss in laying hens for which control methods are limited. In this study, the effects of 20 indigenous fungal strains on poultry red mites in chicken farms were investigated. All experiments were conducted under laboratory condition at 28 ± 1 °C and 80 ± 5% humidity.

Diffusion tensor imaging in pediatric patients with dystonia.

Background: Childhood-onset dystonia is often progressive and severely impairs a child´s life. The pathophysiology is very heterogeneous and treatment responses vary in patients with dystonia. Factors influencing treatment effects remain to be elucidated.

Pharyngeal flap outcomes for velopharyngeal insufficiency: Evaluation of speech, obstructive sleep apnea, and velopharyngeal anatomy.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the speech outcomes, reveal postoperative rates of obstructive sleep apnea, and characterize changes in the pharyngeal flap and velopharyngeal anatomy following pharyngeal flap surgery for velopharyngeal insufficiency. A retrospective chart was reviewed for patients with clefts who underwent pharyngeal flap surgery between November 2020 and November 2021. The data collected included age, gender, cleft palate type, age at pharyngeal flap surgery, postoperative complications, age and type of primary palatoplasty, preoperative and postoperative speech assessments, magnetic resonance imaging findings, and obstructive sleep apnea outcomes.

CD55 Deficiency With Budd-Chiari Syndrome Treated by Liver Transplantation and Eculizumab.

We report the case of a male patient who had a history of early-onset protein-losing enteropathy, chronic diarrhea, and repeated thrombotic events since early childhood. He developed Budd-Chiari syndrome with consequent acute liver failure that required liver transplantation when he was 12 years old. The initial graft failed to function and he required retransplantation.

Size-selective microplastic uptake by freshwater organisms: Fish, mussel, and zooplankton.

Microplastics, as an emergent pollutant, have garnered substantial attention within aquatic environments, yet a significant knowledge gap persists regarding the interplay of organism size and pollution impacts on microplastic uptake in freshwater ecosystems. The main aim of the current study is to assess the microplastic ingestion by aquatic organisms across diverse trophic levels. To achieve this objective, zooplankton, mussels (Anodonta anatina), and fish (Carassius gibelio) were collected from the highly polluted Susurluk River Basin in Türkiye.

The Effects of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) on Obesity-Related Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: a Prospective Observational Study from a Single Center.

Purpose: The objective of the study is to evaluate the effects of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) on mid- to long-term regulation of blood glucose in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) MATERIALS AND METHODS : In this prospective and observational single-center study, a total of 234 patients with obesity and a diagnosis of T2DM who underwent LSG between 2015 and 2020 were evaluated. The demographics and laboratory data, consisting of body mass index (BMI), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c%), and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and total weight loss (TWL%), were compared preoperative and postoperative at 12 and 18 months and annual follow-up for seven consecutive years.

Results: The mean age of 234 patients (female(n)/male(n):191/43) included in the study was 44.

Genotype-phenotype correlation and treatment effects in young patients with -associated disorders.

Background: Patients carrying pathogenic variants in often present with early-onset central hypotonia and global developmental delay, with or without epilepsy. As the disorder progresses, a complex hypertonic and hyperkinetic movement disorder is a common phenotype. A genotype-phenotype correlation has not yet been described and there are no evidence-based therapeutic recommendations.

The variability of phenolic constituents and antioxidant properties among wild populations of Lam.

Unlabelled: In this study, phenolic derivatives and antioxidant activities of fourteen populations, as well as LC-MS/MS analysis of three specific flavonoids were evaluated. Generally, high contents of phenolic derivatives were found in shoot extracts compared to roots. LC-MS/MS, a powerful analytical technique, was employed for the identification and quantify the individual flavonoids in populations' extracts, in a quantity order of quercetin > rutin > apigenin.

Trends in Phenolic Profiles of from Different Geographical Gradients.

The traditional widely used raw material of is currently mainly derived from wild populations, leading to diversification and uncertainty in its quality. The aim of the study was to determine the accumulation differences of phenolic compounds between geographically distant populations of from northern and southern gradients. Plant material was collected from Gaziantep and Nevşehir provinces in Turkey and from wild populations in Lithuania.
