Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare but highly malign tumor. We report a case of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma and discuss the management of this neoplasm in the light of the literature.

The effects of chronic ethanol consumption and ethanol withdrawal on serum cholinesterase activity in rats.

Aims: The effect of chronic ethanol consumption and ethanol withdrawal on serum cholinesterase (ChE) activity was investigated in female Wistar rats.

Primary lung tumors mimicking the salivary gland-type neoplasms are extremely rare. These types of tumors originate from submucosal bronchial glands. Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is an uncommon tumor in this group, and only 7 cases have been reported.

Detection of Epstein Barr Virus in Hodgkin's Disease in Trakya Region of Turkey; by in Situ Hybridization.

The relation of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Hodgkin's disease (HD) has been suggested by serologic, epidemiological and molecular biologic studies. According to these studies the incidence of EBV in HD is high. In the present study, the EBV association with HD in Trakya Region of Turkey was investigated.

Analysis of meatal location in 300 boys.

The high incidence of anterior hypospadias and the consideration of some of the parents that this location is a normal variation and the resistance to the surgical treatment led us to investigate the normal meatal location in boys. The location of external meatus was analyzed in 300 boys. The meatal location was classified as type A (anterior third/tip of the glans) type B (middle third) and type C (posterior third/glandular hypospadias).

Dog liver glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase: purification and kinetic properties.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) catalyses the first step of the pentose phosphate pathway which generates NADPH for anabolic pathways and protection systems in liver. G6PD was purified from dog liver with a specific activity of 130 U x mg(-1) and a yield of 18%. PAGE showed two bands on protein staining; only the slower moving band had G6PD activity.

Lipoblastoma: a rare cervical mass in childhood.

A 4-year-old girl had a left side cervical swelling for three months. The mass was free from surrounding tissues and excised completely. Histopathologic diagnosis of the specimen was lipoblastoma.

Non-invasive evaluation of the adaptations of cardiac function in the neonatal period: a comparison of healthy infants delivered by vaginal route and caesarean section.

Postnatal adaptations of cardiac hemodynamics in infants born vaginally or by caesarean section may be different. These cardiac functions were evaluated by Doppler echocardiography to assess adaptation differences. Cardiac output, heart rate, stroke volume, mean arterial pressure, total systemic vascular resistance, ejection fraction, and ductus arteriosus diameter were determined and compared at 1, 24 and 72 h of life in 22 infants born vaginally (group 1) and 23 born by caesarean section (group 2).

Bilateral synchronous granulomatous orchitis: gray-scale and colour Doppler sonographic findings.

A 60-year-old man presented with impotence ultrasonography demonstrated bilateral irregular hypoechoic infiltration of testes and normal epididymis. Colour Doppler sonography showed only peripheral but no intralesional flow. Since the lesion was presumed as malignancy bilateral high inguinal orchiectomy was performed and bilateral idiopathic granulomatous orchitis was diagnosed.

Patellar metastasis from a lung epidermoid carcinoma.

Patellar metastases are very rare. There have been approximately 20 cases reported in the literature. We have also noted two other reports of patellar metastasis from lung carcinoma as the first manifestation of lung cancer in our literature review.

Firearm fatalities in Edirne, 1984-1997.

During the 14-year period from 1984 to 1997 there were 85 firearm fatalities investigated by the Department of Forensic Medicine and the Department of Pathology in Edirne, Turkey. We determined the characteristics of these 85 firearm deaths which comprised 17.03% of all medicolegal autopsies.

Tumor angiogenesis in stage IB cervical cancer: correlation of microvessel density with survival.

Objective: Because angiogenesis is considered essential for tumor growth and the development of metastasis, we assessed the correlation of microvessel density with overall survival in patients with clinical stage IB carcinoma of the uterine cervix.

Study Design: Histologic slides were immunostained for factor VIII-related antigen. Microvessel density was determined within each tumor by enumeration under a light microscope at 200x magnification and an examination area of 0.

The phenomenon of tumor angiogenesis is an important aspect of understanding tumor biology. Studies in breast carcinoma have shown microvessel density (MVD) assessed by immunohistochemistry to be of prognostic importance in primary breast cancer. On the other hand, recently developed highly sensitive color-coded Doppler techniques offer a noninvasive method to examine neovascularisation in breast tumors.

The influence of vascular space involvement on the prognosis of patients with stage IB cervical carcinoma: correlation of results from hematoxylin and eosin staining with results from immunostaining for factor VIII-related antigen.

Background: There is controversy over the question of whether the involvement of vascular spaces influences the prognosis of patients with carcinoma of the uterine cervix. The aim of the current study was to compare patterns of vascular space involvement determined by hematoxylin and eosin (H & E) staining with those patterns determined by immunostaining for factor VIII-related antigen (F8-RA) with regard to their prognostic impact on the disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) of patients with clinical Stage IB cervical carcinoma. Staining for F8-RA is known to highlight blood vessels predominantly, whereas the presence of tumor cell emboli in vascular spaces of H & E-stained sections mainly indicates lymphatic vessel invasion.

Correlation of vascular endothelial growth factor expression and microvessel density in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.

Background: Angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) appears to be required for the growth of invasive tumors, but little information exists about its role in the development of preinvasive lesions. Vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) has been reported to be a precursor of invasive vulvar cancer. Switching to the angiogenic phenotype is considered a key step in tumor growth. Microvessel density (MVD) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a highly angiogenic peptide, are important parameters of tumor angiogenesis.

Duodenal web with preduodenal portal vein.

This article described an unusual case of an infant with duodenal atresia and preduodenal portal vein without Down's syndrome or other anatomical anomalies associated with this condition. Duodenoduodenostomy was effective. Enteral feeding was re-established 72 hours post-operatively and the patient was discharged home one day later.

Ontario gold miners with lung cancer. Occupational exposure assessment in establishing work-relatedness.

Because of inherent errors in exposure data as well as a requirement in the Workers' Compensation Act of Ontario that all claims must be considered on the merits and justice of the individual case, the criteria for assessing work-relatedness of Ontario gold miners who had primary lung cancer could not be based upon any strict occupational exposure criteria. However, a relationship between exposure to silica, arsenic, and radon progeny was derived from results of the epidemiologic studies. A retrospective occupational exposure assessment of silica dust, arsenic, and radon decay products was made in individual cases presented in this paper.

Hand-arm vibration syndrome: a guide to medical impairment assessment.

Hand-arm vibration syndrome is a complex condition with vascular, sensorineural, and musculoskeletal components. Workers who handle vibratory tools suffer from it, and the severity of this syndrome is now graded internationally using the Stockholm classification. For compensation purposes the severity must be translated into impairment and this paper proposes how this may be done using the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment.

Pulmonary manifestations in patients with malignant melanoma during BCG immunotherapy. A preliminary report.

Ten patients with malignant melanoma who were treated with bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) were studied with chest roentgenograms, scintiscans with radioactive 67gallium citrate, and the single-breath diffusing capacity of carbon monoxide (Dsb). Three patients (stage 1B) with normal findings had no evidence of progression of disease. Seven patients had abnormal findings on at least one test.

Cardiovascular effects of tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants.

This article reviews all available studies on the cardiovascular effects of tri- and tetracyclic antidepressants at therapeutic and toxic levels. There is growing evidence that tricyclics, even at therapeutic levels, can be cardiotoxic. Plasma TCA levels are too variable to define a safe therapeutic range.
