Metastable phases can exist within local minima in the potential energy landscape when they are kinetically "trapped" by various processing routes, such as thermal treatment, grain size reduction, chemical doping, interfacial stress, or irradiation. Despite the importance of metastable materials for many technological applications, little is known about the underlying structural mechanisms of the stabilization process and atomic-scale nature of the resulting defective metastable phase. Investigating ion-irradiated and nanocrystalline zirconia with neutron total scattering experiments, we show that metastable tetragonal ZrO consists of an underlying structure of ferroelastic, orthorhombic nanoscale domains stabilized by a network of domain walls.

Ubiquitin-specific protease 7 (USP7) is implicated in many cancers including colorectal cancer in which it regulates cellular pathways such as Wnt signaling and the P53-MDM2 pathway. With the discovery of small-molecule inhibitors, USP7 has also become a promising target for cancer therapy and therefore systematically identifying USP7 deubiquitinase interaction partners and substrates has become an important goal. In this study, we selected a colorectal cancer cell model that is highly dependent on USP7 and in which USP7 knockdown significantly inhibited colorectal cancer cell viability, colony formation, and cell-cell adhesion.

Silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond are emerging as promising quantum emitters in applications such as quantum communication and quantum information processing. Here, we demonstrate a sub-μs pulsed annealing treatment that dramatically increases the photoluminescence of SiV centers in diamond. Using a silane-functionalized adamantane precursor and a laser-heated diamond anvil cell, the temperature and energy conditions required to form SiV centers in diamond were mapped out via an optical thermometry system with an accuracy of ±50 K and a 1 μs temporal resolution.

Insects are a promising source of high-quality protein, and the insect farming industry will lead to higher sustainability when it overcomes scaling up, cost effectiveness, and automation. In contrast to insect farming (raising and breeding insects as livestock), wild insect harvesting (collecting agricultural insect pests), may constitute a simple sustainable animal protein supplementation strategy. For wild harvest to be successful sufficient insect biomass needs to be collected while simultaneously avoiding the collection of nontarget insects.

2-Benzylbenzimidazoles, or "nitazenes", are a class of novel synthetic opioids (NSOs) that are increasingly being detected alongside fentanyl analogs and other opioids in drug overdose cases. Nitazenes can be 20× more potent than fentanyl but are not routinely tested for during postmortem or clinical toxicology drug screens; thus, their prevalence in drug overdose cases may be under-reported. Traditional analytical workflows utilizing liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) often require additional confirmation with authentic reference standards to identify a novel nitazene.

Assessing the past habitability of Mars and searching for evidence of ancient life at Jezero crater via the rover are the key objectives of NASA's Mars 2020 mission. Onboard the rover, PIXL (Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry) is one of the best suited instruments to search for microbial biosignatures due to its ability to characterize chemical composition of fine scale textures in geological targets using a nondestructive technique. PIXL is also the first micro-X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer onboard a Mars rover.

Understanding radioactive Cs contamination has been a central issue at Fukushima Daiichi and other nuclear legacy sites; however, atomic-scale characterization of radioactive Cs in environmental samples has never been achieved. Here we report, for the first time, the direct imaging of radioactive Cs atoms using high-resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). In Cs-rich microparticles collected from Japan, we document inclusions that contain 27 - 36 wt% of Cs (reported as CsO) in a zeolite: pollucite.

The opioid crisis in the United States is being fueled by the rapid emergence of new fentanyl analogs and precursors that can elude traditional library-based screening methods, which require data from known reference compounds. Since reference compounds are unavailable for new fentanyl analogs, we examined if fentanyls (fentanyl + fentanyl analogs) could be identified in a reference-free manner using a combination of electrospray ionization (ESI), high-resolution ion mobility (IM) spectrometry, high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS), and higher-energy collision-induced dissociation (MS/MS). We analyzed a mixture containing nine fentanyls and W-15 (a structurally similar molecule) and found that the protonated forms of all fentanyls exhibited two baseline-separated IM distributions that produced different MS/MS patterns.

We previously demonstrated that autophagy inhibition-mediated epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in human alveolar epithelial type II (ATII) cells augments local myofibroblast differentiation in pulmonary fibrosis by paracrine signalling. Vapor detection is a noncontact sampling method, which is a less invasive means of explosives screening than physical swiping. Explosive vapor detection is a challenge due to the low levels of vapors available for detection. This study demonstrates that the parts-per-quadrillion sensitivity of atmospheric flow tube-mass spectrometry (AFT-MS) combined with a high-volume air sampler enables standoff detection of trace explosives vapor at distances of centimeters to meters.
