Objectives: In patients with non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD), the response to treatment is evaluated based on microbiological, clinical, and radiological data. However, little is known about the dynamics of CT findings. The aim of this study was to evaluate CT changes in NTM-PD in order to define radiological criteria for treatment success.

A better understanding of the clinical phenotype of adults with PCD is needed to identify individuals for referral to diagnostic testing.
Research Question: What is the frequency of PCD among adults with bronchiectasis; how do people with PCD differ from those with other etiologies; and which clinical characteristics are independently associated with PCD?
Study Design And Methods: We investigated the proportion of PCD among the participants of the Prospective German Non-CF-Bronchiectasis Registry (PROGNOSIS) study; applied multiple imputation to account for missing data in 64 (FEV), 58 (breathlessness), 26 (pulmonary exacerbations), and two patients (BMI), respectively; and identified predictive variables from baseline data using multivariate logistic regression analysis.
Background: Oxygen (O2) therapy is one of the most commonly applied medications in German hospitals and rescue services. Both hypoxemia and hyperoxemia can be associated with complications. There is currently a lack of reliable data on the use, documentation and surveillance of O2-therapy in German hospitals.

Recently, several publications on COVID-19 outcomes in this patient population appeared, but knowledge on optimal treatment, mortality, outcomes, and appropriate risk predictors is limited. A retrospective analysis was performed in a German high-volume lung transplant center between 19th March 2020 and 18th May 2021.

We hypothesized that pleural effusions requiring thoracocentesis lead to poor outcomes after LTx. We performed a single-center retrospective analysis of thoracocenteses after initial hospital discharge in LTx patients between March 2008 and September 2020 to identify risk factors, etiologies, and outcomes.

Methods: We developed machine learning-based algorithms using historical claims data from cases with NTM-PD to predict patients with a high probability of having previously undiagnosed NTM-PD and to assess actual prevalence and incidence. Adults with incident NTM-PD were classified from a representative 5% sample of the German population covered by statutory health insurance during 2011-2016 by the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision code A31.
Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring forms an integral part of the management of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children. The prediction of elevated ICP from imaging is important when deciding on whether to implement invasive ICP monitoring for a patient. However, the radiological markers of pathologically elevated ICP have not been specifically validated in paediatric studies.

Nanoparticles administered to the respiratory tract cause local reactions and cross the blood-air barrier, thereby providing a means for easy systemic administration but also a potential source of toxicity. Little is known about how these effects are influenced by preexisting airway diseases such as asthma.

Consumers' awareness of the energy within food and expended from exercise has previously been found to be limited. Therefore, the aim was to investigate whether habitual exercisers (50 adults and 49 children from 5 sports clubs) were able to conceptualise the energy expenditure (EE), following 1 h of their regular sports training, into a quantifiable amount of perceived energy compensation (PEC) in the form of food (chocolate) or drink (sports drink).

For direct analysis of biological samples this prototype offers alternatives to conventional GC detectors and electronic nose technology. The performance was compared to an identical instrument incorporating a long single capillary column (LSCC).

The assessment of stool samples for the diagnosis of gastro-intestinal diseases is in principle an ideal non-invasive testing method. This paper presents an approach to stool analysis using headspace gas chromatography and a single metal oxide sensor coupled to artificial neural network software.

In this paper, we evaluate a new simple in-house fabricated, GC-sensor device in the diagnosis of bladder cancer based on volatiles.

The compounds ethanol, acetone, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, 3-methylbutanal, hexanal and 2,3-butanedione occurred with the highest frequency. The volatiles analysed were then compared to a previously published study of the volatiles from asymptomatic adult faeces.

Novel room temperature sensors were fabricated based on ultraviolet light activation of nanoparticulate metal oxide surfaces using light emitting diodes. These sensors gave reversible electrical resistance changes in the low ppm/ppb range to volatile organic compounds found in breath, including acetone, acetaldehyde, pentane and ethanol.

Their utility as barrier technologies in oral care has been considered, and aqueous nanosuspensions of the materials have been deposited as films on model dental hard surfaces in the presence and absence of a salivary pellicle. Calcium hydroxyapatite has been used as a model for enamel, as has PMMA due to its widespread use in denture fabrication.

Several volatile collection techniques were employed including dichloromethane solvent extraction, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and thermal desorption of VOCs entrained on Tenax GR. In addition, a new method of solid sample injection (SSI) is described which utilises a low injector temperature and an all-glass deactivated injector liner designed to minimise both the formation of pyrolysis products and analyte degradation.

There are fewer H-bonded interactions between the components than within the bulk of the pure mucoadhesive agent. The pH of the medium influences the structures of both the poly(acrylic acid) and the mucus, which, in turn, determine the nature and the extent of mucoadhesive interactions.

The copolymers were adsorbed onto poly(styrene) films-chosen as simplified physicochemical models of skin surfaces-and their surface characteristics probed by contact angle goniometry, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These functional surfaces were then presented to microbial cultures, bacterial attachment was assessed by fluorescence microscopy and AFM, and the structures of the polymer films examined again spectroscopically.
