Comparative Efficacy of Topical Pertmehrin, Crotamiton and Sulfur Ointment in Treatment of Scabies.

Background: Scabies is an ectoparasitic infection, which occurs because of direct skin-to skin contact. The ideal treatment modality is still unclear and further research on this topic is warranted. The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy and safety of the topical scabicides: permethrin, crotamiton and sulfur ointment.

Lysosomal enzymes in serum and synovial fluid in patients with osteoarthritis.

Objective: To assess the activity of arylsulfatase (AS), acid phosphatase (ACP), cathepsin D (CAT-D) and alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) in blood serum and synovial fluid (SF) of patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods: The study included 43 subjects with OA (35 hip OA, 8 knee OA), submitted total joint replacement. The control group consisted of 58 subjects with no past history of musculoskeletal disorders.

Effects of open versus laparoscopic nephrectomy techniques on oxidative stress markers in patients with renal cell carcinoma.

The aim of the study was to determine the concentration of lipid peroxidation products, the activity of selected antioxidant and lysosomal enzymes, and protease inhibitor in patients with renal cell carcinoma who underwent radical nephrectomy. The studied group included 44 patients: 21 of them underwent open surgery, while 23 underwent laparoscopy. Blood samples were collected three times: before treatment and 12 hours and five days after nephrectomy.

Activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in liver and muscles of some fish.

In this study we examined superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) concentration in liver and muscles of four fish species: the carp, the brown trout, the white cod and the flounder. Higher SOD activity and higher TBARS concentration was revealed in the tissues of marine fish in comparison to freshwater fish. The highest SOD activity was observed in the cod while the highest TBARS concentration was in the flounder.

The effect of brachytherapy on antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation in patients with cancer of the uterine cervix.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of brachytherapy on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status in patients with uterine cervix cancer. The study was conducted on 84 uterine cervix cancer patients from the Brachytherapy Department of the Regional Centre of Oncology in Bydgoszcz. Patients with uterine cervix cancer were found to have elevated levels of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defence system impairment relative to healthy females.

Cell cycle in sporadic melanoma.

Sporadic melanoma is a neoplasm whose etiology has not been fully investigated. Contemporary achievements in molecular biology have made it possible to localize the genes whose damage can contribute to the initiation of neoplastic transformation of melanocytes and lead to a progression of the disease. The majority of these genes are responsible for the correct progression of phase G1 of the cell cycle.

Activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase and the level of lipid peroxidation products reactive with TBA in patients with psoriasis.

Background: The etiology of psoriasis, one of the most common chronic dermatoses, has not been elucidated yet. Involvement of antioxidant enzymes is suspected. The study aimed to determine the concentrations of lipid peroxidation products reactive with thiobarbituric acid and antioxidant enzymes activity.
