The main advantage of using ferroelectric materials as a component of complex heterostructures is the ability to tune various properties of the whole system by means of an external electric field. In particular, the electric field may change the polarization direction within the ferroelectric material and consequently affect the structural properties, which in turn affects the electronic and magnetic properties of the neighboring material. In addition, ferroelectrics allow the electrostriction phenomenon to proceed, which is promising and can be used to affect the magnetic states of the interface state in the heterostructure through a magnetic component.

The use of carbon nanotubes to improve the mechanical properties of polymers is one of the promising directions in materials science. The addition of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to a polymer results in significant improvements in its mechanical, electrical, optical, and structural properties. However, the addition of SWCNTs does not always improve the polymer properties.

COVID-19 pandemic has posed a severe healthcare challenge calling for an integrated approach in determining the clues for early non-invasive diagnostics of the potentially severe cases and efficient patient stratification. Here we analyze the clinical, laboratory and CT scan characteristics associated with high risk of COVID-19-related death outcome in the cohort of severely-ill patients in Russia. The data obtained reveal that elevated dead lymphocyte counts, decreased early apoptotic lymphocytes, decreased CD14+/HLA-Dr+ monocytes, increased expression of JNK in PBMCs, elevated IL-17 and decreased PAI-1 serum levels are associated with a high risk of COVID-19-related mortality thus suggesting them to be new prognostic factors.

The article describes the rare clinical case, demonstrating sudden onset of neurological manifestations (seizures and consequent formation of ischemic stroke foci) in a 29 year-old female patient during tooth extraction (right lower third molar) using the high-speed dental drill. Air injection through damaged tissues caused subcutaneous emphysema in the buccal area that caused air embolism. Presence of asymptomatic congenital heart defect in the patient (atrial septal defect) allowed the bubbles of air to move paradoxically from right to left with consequent embolization of small cerebral arteries.

Background: The problem of noninvasive diagnosis of transplant dysfunction in patients is one of the most complex problems in transplantology at the present time. Because transplanted organs can be ischemic, the measurement of redox potential (RP) in blood serum reflects the prooxidant-antioxidant balance in the organism. It was hypothesized that certain dysfunctions and postoperative complications in transplant patients may be accompanied by a change in the RP of blood plasma.

KCNQ (Kv7) channels underlie a voltage-gated K(+) current best known for control of neuronal excitability, and its inhibition by Gq/11-coupled, muscarinic signaling. Studies have indicated expression of KCNQ channels in airway smooth muscle (ASM), a tissue that is predominantly regulated by muscarinic receptor signaling. Therefore, we investigated the function of KCNQ channels in rodent ASM and their interplay with Gq/11-coupled M3 muscarinic receptors.

The GTPase dynamin is critically involved in membrane fission during endocytosis. How does dynamin use the energy of GTP hydrolysis for membrane remodeling? By monitoring the ionic permeability through lipid nanotubes (NT), we found that dynamin was capable of squeezing NT to extremely small radii, depending on the NT lipid composition. However, long dynamin scaffolds did not produce fission: instead, fission followed GTPase-dependent cycles of assembly and disassembly of short dynamin scaffolds and involved a stochastic process dependent on the curvature stress imposed by dynamin.

The fabrication of three-dimensional (3-D) structures using computer-controlled ultraviolet (UV) photopolymerization of acrylates (laser stereolithography) often results in the trapping of residual unreacted monomer and initiator. These residuals can leach from the finished structure and affect the biological response of cells and tissues. Thus the potential applications of these structures for tissue engineering have not been fully realized.

The binding of Gd3+ ions to linear double-stranded DNA molecules in water-salt solutions or in liquid-crystalline dispersions is accompanied by sharp changes in their optical and X-ray characteristics. Depending on the initial conditions of complex formation, the binding of Gd3+ ions either to DNA bases or phosphate groups occurs, which leads to changes in the properties of the liquid-crystalline dispersions. The packing of neighboring DNA molecules in particles of the liquid-crystalline dispersion of the complex DNA-Gd3+ depends strongly on the concentration of Gd3+ ions.

Wilms' tumor (WT), one of the most common pediatric solid cancers, arises in the developing kidney as a result of genetic and epigenetic changes that lead to the abnormal proliferation and differentiation of the metanephric blastema. As activation of signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs) plays an important role in the maintenance/growth and differentiation of the metanephric blastema, and constitutively activated STATs facilitate neoplastic behaviors of a variety of cancers, we hypothesized that dysregulation of STAT signaling may also contribute to WT pathogenesis. Accordingly, we evaluated STAT phosphorylation patterns in tumors and found that STAT1 was constitutively phosphorylated on serine 727 (S727) in 19 of 21 primary WT samples and two WT cell lines.
