Introduction: The Pivot Point (PP) method is commonly used in the radiographic assessment of carpal deformities in young foals, as the range of deviation may influence treatment choice. The aims of this study were to assess the intra- and interobserver reproducibility of the PP method and subjective radiographic evaluation without line drawing to establish the anatomical site responsible for carpal deviation in foals and to evaluate the agreement between these two techniques.

Material And Methods: Anonymized radiographs of foals presented for investigation of carpal deformity or prematurity were retrospectively and independently reviewed by six readers.

Article Synopsis
  • * Thirteen lame horses were analyzed using standing magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) to detect signs of subchondral and trabecular bone injuries, primarily located on the medial aspect of the P1 glenoid, with various noted changes.
  • * Follow-up imaging revealed worsening conditions in some horses, with one case ultimately resulting in a comminuted fracture, suggesting that the observed bone injuries are indicative of chronic overload and potential incomplete stress fractures.

Background: Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) is a versatile technique employed not only to correct pre-implant alveolar bone defects but also to facilitate bone defect correction during simultaneous implant placement. The effectiveness of GBR varies significantly among different protocols, as reported in the literature. This study specifically aimed to radiologically evaluate the horizontal bone gain obtained using a GBR procedure combining a particulate allograft, platelet-rich fibrin, resorbable collagen membrane, and screw tents.

Introduction: Head and neck cancer squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the seventh most common cancer worldwide with around 600,000 new diagnosis each year. Nowadays, in locally advanced disease, radiotherapy (RT) play an important role, this with or without chemotherapy in organ preservation strategies. More specific for early stage localized disease, RT (or surgery) seems to give similar results on locoregional control (LRC) and choice is made according to the organ preservation issue.

A 15-year-old pony was presented for acute neurological signs. Neurological examination suggested a brainstem lesion, blood laboratory tests detected an active inflammatory process, and upper respiratory endoscopy identified a suppurative lesion at the dorsal aspect of the right guttural pouch. Computed tomography was performed and findings were consistent with pituitary abscess, meningitis, and atlanto-occipital joint septic arthritis.

Groups of sympatric taxa with low interspecific genetic differentiation, but considerable ecological differences, offer great opportunities to study the dynamics of divergence and speciation. This is the case of ciscoes (Coregonus spp.) in the Laurentian Great Lakes, which are characterized by a complex evolutionary history and are commonly described as having undergone an adaptive radiation.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compared the appearance of horse joint cartilage under weight-bearing versus non-weight-bearing conditions using MRI scans.
  • Ten equine forefeet were examined to measure cartilage thickness and joint space, revealing that weight-bearing limbs had significantly thinner cartilage, especially in the distal phalanx.
  • The research also found that blinded reviewers could correctly identify the weight-bearing condition in 83% of cases, indicating that weight-bearing conditions may complicate the detection of cartilage abnormalities in MRI images.

[Oral allergies].

Rev Med Brux

December 2018

Oral allergies to dental materials are a growing problem and remain poorly diagnosed by health professionals. The complaints of patients with oral allergy are various and include sensations of burning or stinging of the oral mucosa, sensations of dryness of the oral cavity, or general symptoms such as headache, dyspepsia, asthenia, arthralgia, and myalgia. Signs suggestive of oral allergy include erythema, edema, purpuric patches on the palate, ulcerations of the oral mucosa (canker sore), gingivitis, glossitis mimicking geographic tongue, angular cheilitis, peri-oral eczema or the presence of lichenoid reactions of the oral mucosa.

Medication development for cocaine-addicted patients is difficult, and many promising preclinical candidates have failed in clinical trials. One reason for the difficulty in translating preclinical findings to the human condition is that drug testing is typically conducted in behavioral procedures in which animals do not show addiction-like traits. Recently, a DSM-IV-based animal model has been developed that allows studying the transition to an addiction-like behavior.
