A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, amylolytic bacterial strain, designated as bsSlp3-1, was isolated from the Slepian water system, a freshwater reservoir. Strain bsSlp3-1 was found to be aerobic, oxidase-positive and catalase-negative, grew at 5-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C), pH 5.0-9.

[Postoperative intussusception in children].

The authors present diagnosis and treatment of two children with postoperative intussusception. A 6-month baby with retroperitoneal teratoma developed clinical signs of intestinal obstruction in 2 days after surgery. The child underwent redo laparotomy, and ileocecal intussusception was found.

Complete Genome Sequence of Pseudomonas putida BS3701, a Promising Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon-Degrading Strain for Bioremediation Technologies.

The strain BS3701 was isolated from soil contaminated with coke by-product waste (Moscow Region, Russian Federation). It is capable of degrading crude oil and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The BS3701 genome consists of a 6,337,358-bp circular chromosome and two circular plasmids (pBS1141 with 107,388 bp and pBS1142 with 54,501 bp).

Surfactant-Switched Positive/Negative Electrorheological Effect in Tungsten Oxide Suspensions.

The electrorheological (ER) effect was experimentally observed in dielectric suspensions containing tungsten oxide (WO) modified with surfactant molecules (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dodecylamine (DDA)) in electric fields up to several kilovolts per millimeter. The dielectric properties of WO suspensions in silicone oil were analyzed, depending on the frequency of the electric field, in the range from 25 to 10 Hz. Unmodified WO suspensions, as well as suspensions modified with sodium dodecyl sulfate, were shown to exhibit a positive electrorheological effect, whereas suspensions modified with dodecylamine demonstrated a negative electrorheological effect.

Appliance of Navigated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Radiosurgery for Brain Metastases.

Purpose: Navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) provides noninvasive visualization of eloquent brain areas. The nTMS is usually applied in presurgical planning to minimize the risk of surgery-related neurological deterioration. The capabilities of cross-polarization optical coherence tomography (CP OCT) for early bladder-cancer detection are assessed in statistical study and compared with the traditional OCT. Unlike the traditional OCT that demonstrates images only in copolarization, CP OCT acquires images in cross-polarization and copolarization simultaneously. 116 patients with localized flat suspicious lesions in the bladder were enrolled, 360 CP OCT images were obtained and analyzed.

[Morpho-functional compensatory changes of colonic mucosa after long-term exposure to urine in the experiment].

Using 60 outbred albino male rats, the changes of colonic mucosa were studied after rectal infusion of urine for 1, 3 and 5 months. In response to prolonged exposure to urine, the mucosa was found to undergo gradual atrophic changes, including the reduction of its thickness and crypt depth. A randomized parallel study was performed to compare the antihypertensive effect of normobaric hypoxia and low energetic laser irradiation in 57 patients with essential hypertension stage I using 24-hour blood pressure monitoring. [Effect of promethazine hydrochloride (pipolphen) on the stability of R plasmid resistance in Escherichia coli].

The influence of promethazin hydrochloride (pipolphen) on stability of R plasmid inheritance in Escherichia coli strains of various serogroups was studied. The strains were isolated from patients with acute intestinal infection and from healthy persons. It was shown that in subbacteriostatic concentrations (100 to 450 micrograms/ml) pipolphen promoted elimination of the R plasmids.

For the first time the experimental and field studies of Leptospira infections, carried out over the period of 6 years, have revealed that the habitat of striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius Pallas 1778) serving as a host for Leptospira pomona, serovar mozdok, is much wider than the habitat of the infective agent proper. The presence of an animal species highly sensitive to a definite leptospiral serovar and serving as its reservoir at a given locality cannot be regarded as a proof of the presence of the epizootic process without bacteriological confirmation. But, in the absence of homologous Leptospira carriage, intensive leptospiral seroconversion can be attributed to a population other than that of the host.

The drainage of a natural focus of leptospirosis of the flood plain-swamp type, carried out over the period of 15 years, has led to changes in the species structure of small mammals and to an increase in the number of Leptospira-carrying species. Nevertheless, like before drainage, the prevalent species and the main carrier of leptospires is still the root vole (Microtus oeconomus Pallas). The intensity of the epizootic process among small mammals at the final stage of drainage has proved to be similar to that at the initial stage.
