Bone marrow-derived stem cell (BMSC) contribution to liver repair varies considerably and recent evidence suggests these cells may contribute to liver fibrosis. We investigated the mobilization and hepatic recruitment of bone marrow (BM) stem cells in patients with alcohol liver injury and their contribution to parenchymal/non-parenchymal liver cell lineages. Liver biopsies from alcoholic hepatitis (AH) patients and male patients, who received a female liver transplant and developed AH, were analyzed for BM stem cell content by fluorescence in situ hybridization and immunostaining.

Aim: To determine the prevalence of porcine endogenous retrovirus (PERV) in various pig breeds raised in China including Chinese experimental mini-pigs by PERV-reverse transcriptase (PERV-RT enzyme). Moreover, the potential for infection of PERV was investigated in patients treated with a bioreactor based on porcine liver cells (n = 3).

Methods: Pig serum, liver and muscle cell-free supernatants were collected from various Chinese pig breeds.

Bone marrow (BM) hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) have been shown to facilitate regeneration in multiple nonhematopoietic tissues by either generating epithelial cells or altering the inflammatory response. Depending on injury type, the predominant mechanism of epithelial lineage regeneration occurs by spontaneous cell fusion or transdifferentiation. Irrespective of the mechanism, mobilization from the BM is a prerequisite.

Background & Aims: Studies have indicated that stem cells have unexpected plasticity and can differentiate down a multitude of nonhematopoietic cell lineages in rodents. Our aim was to identify whether human cord blood cells, which are a rich source of stem cells, would be able to differentiate into hepatocytes when infused into nonobese diabetic-severe combined immunodeficient (NOD-SCID) mice. We also wanted to test whether such differentiated cells were the result of cellular fusion or true stem cell transdifferentiation.
