Background: A paravalvular leak (PVL) is a complication following valve replacement, which may lead to heart failure and hemolysis. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the clinical outcome after transcatheter PVL closure differs according to the prominent indication of the procedure (symptoms of heart failure or hemolysis).

Methods: The data of consecutive patients who had transcatheter treatment for PVL between July 2011 and September 2022 in five Greek centers were analyzed.

The impact of the antiplatelet regimen and the extent of associated platelet inhibition on cerebrovascular microembolic events during transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) are unknown. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of ticagrelor versus clopidogrel and of platelet inhibition on the number of cerebrovascular microembolic events in patients undergoing TAVI. Patients scheduled for TAVI were randomized previous to the procedure to either aspirin and ticagrelor or to aspirin and clopidogrel.

Article Synopsis
  • Obesity is a known risk factor for heart failure (HF), but surprisingly, it may lead to better outcomes for HF patients, particularly those receiving cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).
  • In a study of 1,277 patients who underwent CRT implantation, follow-up data suggested that those with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 kg/m had a significantly lower risk of mortality or needing advanced heart therapies compared to those with normal or higher BMI.
  • The use of defibrillator backup (CRT-D) also independently improved survival rates, showing that both a moderate BMI and CRT-D can enhance long-term survival in heart failure patients.

Background/objective: Dietary patterns may play an important role in the prognosis of heart failure.

Methods: Dietary habits, sleeping habits, physical activity and anxiety and depression status were recorded in 326 patients (90 females, mean age 73.45 ± 10.

Background: Multifocal atrial tachycardias confer an adverse prognosis in hospitalized patients. We assessed the prognostic impact of multifocal atrial rhythms (MARs-either chaotic atrial rhythm or multifocal atrial tachycardia/bradycardia) in very elderly outpatients.

Methods: One hundred ten subjects aged 60-74 years, 112 aged 75-89 years, and 61 over 90 years old, were enrolled and prospectively evaluated.

Background: The angiotensinogen M235T and aldosterone synthase C-344T gene polymorphisms have been associated with cardiac and structure function. However, these associations in untreated hypertension remain unknown. We examined whether these variants determined both echocardiography indices and the potential associated underlying mechanisms, including cystatin-C and vascular inflammation.

Systolic and diastolic functions of both ventricles play a crucial role in the progression of chronic heart failure (CHF). As data about the role of dietary habits in ventricular dysfunction are lacking, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between biventricular diastolic and systolic function and dietary habits in patients with CHF. During 2007, 372 consecutive CHF patients were enrolled.
