This study examined whether ruminative style moderated the effects of expressive writing. Sixty-nine participants were assessed for ruminative style and depression symptoms at the beginning of their 1st college semester. This study examined the effect of changing the instructional set for written disclosure on psychological and physical health reports among traumatized college students with current posttraumatic stress symptoms. Eighty-two participants were randomly assigned to one of three writing conditions that focused on emotional expression (EE), insight and cognitive assimilation, or to a control condition. Participants assigned to the EE condition reported significant improvements in psychological and physical health 1 month following the writing sessions relative to the other two conditions.

Behavioral naltrexone therapy (BNT) was developed to address the shortcomings of naltrexone maintenance for opiate dependence and improve compliance by integrating several empirically validated methods, including the use of a significant other to monitor compliance, voucher incentives, and motivational techniques. An uncontrolled Stage I pilot trial (N = 47) of BNT was conducted. Baseline demographic and clinical variables were evaluated as predictors of retention with univariate tests.

In the current study, the authors examined the effects of systematically varying the writing instructions for the written emotional disclosure procedure. College undergraduates with a trauma history and at least moderate posttraumatic stress symptoms were asked to write about (a) the same traumatic experience, (b) different traumatic experiences, or (c) nontraumatic everyday events across 3 written disclosure sessions. Results show that participants who wrote about the same traumatic experience reported significant reductions in psychological and physical symptoms at follow-up assessments compared with other participants.

Although the eating disorder nosology has become refined over the years, considerable problems remain. The purpose of the present study was to empirically examine eating disorder classification using a sample of treatment-seeking eating-disorder patients. One hundred and fifty-nine patients with diagnoses of anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and eating disorder, not otherwise specified (EDNOS), were included in a cluster analysis using a variety of eating disorder variables.
