Purpose Of Review: Donor risk factors and events surrounding donation impact the quantity and quality of grafts generated to meet liver transplant waitlist demands. Donor interventions represent an opportunity to mitigate injury and risk factors within donors themselves. The purpose of this review is to describe issues to address among donation after brain death, donation after circulatory determination of death, and living donors directly, for the sake of optimizing relevant outcomes among donors and recipients.

In this study we evaluate the outcomes of patients subject to ICOD and identify radiological and clinical factors associated with progression to DNC. In this first prospective multicenter study we tested by multivariate regression the association of clinical and radiological severity features with progression to DNC.

Sepsis diagnosis in these patients is difficult, and MR-proADM is a widely studied sepsis biomarker. This study evaluates MR-proADM levels during the resuscitation phase, considering the potential influence of haemodynamic changes and its usefulness for the early sepsis detection in burn patients.

Chronic neuropathic pain after mastectomy occurs frequently and is a serious health problem. In our previous single-center, prospective, randomized controlled clinical study, we demonstrated that the combination of serratus anterior plane block (SAM) and pectoral nerve block type I (PECS I) with general anesthesia reduced acute postoperative pain.

A key part of preoperative optimization is appropriate management of long-term medications, yet guidelines and consensus statements for perioperative medication management are lacking. Available resources use recommendations derived from individual studies and do not include a multidisciplinary focus on formal consensus.

We hypothesized that treating severe burn patients with high doses of AA (HDAA) can reduce fluid resuscitation requirements and prevent organ dysfunction. We performed a unicentric, retrospective case-control study of 75 burn patients: 25 patients admitted from 2018 to 2019 with more than 30% Total Surface Body Surface Area (TSBA) burned who received HDAA (66 mg/kg/h as soon as possible after admission until 36 h after injury), and 50 patients admitted from 2014 to 2017 with similar Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI)/Baux scores who were treated with the same protocol but did not receive HDAA.

Regional anesthesia during mastectomy may offer the prevention of postoperative pain. One potential protocol is the combination of serratus anterior plane block (SAM block) with pectoral nerve block I (PECS I), but the results and potential benefits are limited.

Questions/purposes: This pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) of atorvastatin vs. placebo in orthopedic surgery patients was performed in order to assess: (1) the prevalence of perioperative myocardial injury; (2) the effect of atorvastatin on perioperative inflammation; and (3) the feasibility of performing a large RCT of statin therapy in orthopedic patients.

Introduction: There is a high incidence of blood transfusion following hip fractures in elderly patients. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has proven efficacy in decreasing blood loss in general trauma patients as well as patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery. A randomised controlled trial will measure the effect of TXA in a population of patients undergoing hip fracture surgery.

We describe the clinical course of the first case of Ebola virus disease contracted outside of Africa, in Madrid, Spain.
Methods: Herein we report clinical, laboratory, and virological findings of the treatment of a female nurse assistant aged 44 years who was infected with Ebola virus around Sept 25-26, 2014, while caring for a Spanish missionary with confirmed Ebola virus disease who had been medically evacuated from Sierra Leone to La Paz-Carlos III University Hospital, Madrid.
One important change the head of boar spermatozoa during freeze-thawing is the destabilisation of its nucleoprotein structure due to a disruption of disulfide bonds. With the aim of better understanding these changes in frozen-thawed spermatozoa, two agents, namely reduced glutathione (GSH) and procaine hydrochloride (ProHCl), were added at different concentrations to the freezing media at different concentrations and combinations over the range 1-2mM. Then, 30 and 240 min after thawing, cysteine-free residue levels of boar sperm nucleoproteins, DNA fragmentation and other sperm functional parameters were evaluated.

A strategy for palliation of the symptoms caused by MPE should permanently control fluid accumulation, preclude any need for reintervention, and limit hospital length of stay (LOS). We compared video-assisted thorascopic (VATS) talc insufflation with placement of a tunneled pleural catheter (TPC) to assess which intervention better met these palliative goals.

Going beyond generalizing to these traditional scenarios, our research focused on the analysis of gene-by-gene interactions leading to epistasis for inbreeding depression effects. Under a Bayesian context, inbreeding depression effects were evaluated for weaning weight (WW) in a commercial rabbit population founded from 4 bucks and 1 doe (MARET population).
