This work reviews the application of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Design of Experiments (DOE), and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) in heterogeneous catalysis, based on an analysis of recent scientific literature. Heterogeneous catalysis plays a key role in various industries, guiding chemical reactions, optimizing the performance of different processes and/or prioritizing products, and ANOVA, DOE and RSM are valuable tools to understand the intricate relationships between catalyst properties, process variables and reaction responses. This understanding facilitates improvements in catalysts performance and selectivity, thereby optimizing processes.

The effect of the chemical activation, using HNO3, of a commercial carbon nanofiber (CNF) on its surface chemistry and adsorption properties is studied in this work. The adsorption of different alkanes (linear and cyclic), aromatic compounds and chlorohydrocarbons on both the parent and the oxidized CNF were compared. Temperature-programmed desorption results, in agreement with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments, reveal the existence of oxygen groups on the surface of the treated CNF.

Carbon materials with different textural and surface chemistry properties have been studied to analyze their behavior in removing aromatic compounds (phenol, o-chlorophenol, p-nitrophenol, aniline, and phenol compound mixtures) from water. A mesoporous high surface area graphite and a microporous activated carbon with (HSAGox and ACox) and without (HSAGT and ACT) oxygen surface groups, were used as adsorbents. Apparent surface areas, surface oxygen groups, and zero points of charge have been determined.
