Purpose: Antegrade colonic enemas (ACE) can be an effective management option for defecation disorders and improve quality of life. Best practice regarding channel placement is unclear and variation may exist around preferred initial type of channel, age at placement, and underlying diagnoses. We aimed to describe practice patterns and patient characteristics around ACE channel placement.

Objectives: We evaluate long-term symptomatic improvement in vascular ring patients who underwent thoracoscopic division at a single quaternary pediatric surgery center.

Methods: All pediatric patients who underwent vascular ring division without Kommerell's diverticulum resection between 01/2007-12/2022 were included. Surgeries were performed by pediatric general and thoracic surgeons.

Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 74 patients analyzed, those on extracorporeal life support for more than 5 days were significantly less likely to receive CAR, and many patients exhibited artery issues like stenosis or occlusion during the follow-up period.
  • * The findings indicate that both CAR and ligation result in similar neurodevelopmental outcomes, but the lack of standardized follow-up limits the ability to assess long-term function and informs a need for better risk assessment and monitoring after decannulation

Objective: To describe adolescent injuries by the community-level social vulnerability, focusing on injuries related to interpersonal violence.

Background: The Center for Disease Control and Prevention's social vulnerability index (SVI) is a tool used to characterize community-level vulnerability.

Methods: Injured adolescent trauma patients (13-17 years old) cared for at a large Level I trauma center over a 10-year period were identified.

Background: Computed tomography scans have been used when cross-axial imaging is required to evaluate pediatric post-appendectomy abscesses. To reduce a source of radiation exposure, our institution converted to using contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging to replace computed tomography scans in this clinical context. Our aim is to evaluate the performance of magnetic resonance imaging compared to computed tomography scans and associated clinical outcomes in this patient population.

Importance: Firearm-related injuries are the leading cause of death among children and adolescents in the US. For youths aged 10 to 19 years, 64% of firearm-related deaths are due to assault. Understanding the association between the rate of death due to assault-related firearm injury and both community-level vulnerability and state-level gun laws may inform prevention efforts and public health policy.

Background: Community-level factors can profoundly impact children's health, including the risk of violent injury. This study's objective was to understand the relationship between the Childhood Opportunity Index and pediatric firearm injury owing to interpersonal violence compared with a motor vehicle crash.

Methods: All pediatric patients (<18 years) who presented with an initial encounter with a firearm injury or motor vehicle crash between 2016 to 2021 were identified from 35 children's hospitals included in the Pediatric Health Information System database.

Purpose: Fecal continence is a concern for many patients with idiopathic constipation and can significantly impact quality of life. It is unknown whether racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities are seen in fecal continence within the idiopathic constipation population. We aimed to evaluate fecal continence and associated demographic characteristics in children with idiopathic constipation referred for surgical evaluation.

Purpose: We aim to describe interpersonal violence-related injury patterns in the pediatric trauma population and to identify predictors of recidivism.

Methods: In this retrospective analysis from a single institution, we included pediatric patients (≤17 years) treated (2006-2020) for traumatic injury related to interpersonal violence (IPV). Patient characteristics were compared among mechanism types and between recidivists and non recidivists using two sample t-tests, Wilcoxon rank-sum tests, and Pearson's chi-squared.

Background: The survival rates from breast cancer in Africa are poor and yet the incidence rates are on the rise. In this study, we hypothesized that, in Africa, a continent with great disparities in socio-economic status, race, tumor biology, and cultural characteristics, the survival rates from breast cancer vary greatly based on region, tumor biology (hormone receptor), gender, and race. We aimed to conduct the first comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis on region, gender, tumor-biology and race-specific 5-year breast cancer survival rates in Africa and compared them to 20-year survival trends in the United States.

Background: The reported incidence rates of sexual dysfunction (SD) and pain with sexual activity (PSA) after inguinal hernia repair in males vary considerably. This meta-analysis explores the rates of SD and PSA after different surgical and anesthesia types to understand patient risk after inguinal hernia repair.

Study Design: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines to search 3 databases (EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library).
