Background: Pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) are frequently detected incidentally and vary from benign to malignant. Accurate differentiation between mucinous (M-PCLs) and non-mucinous PCLs (NM-PCLs) is essential for appropriate management. This study aims to validate the accuracy of on-site glucose measurement using a glucometer with a cut-off of 50 mg/dL for distinguishing M-PCLs from NM-PCLs.

This narrative review aims to describe the current status of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in characterizing renal cystic lesion. The imaging techniques usually performed for their evaluation are ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with different criteria of application based on the individual case and the purpose of the examination. Generally, US, as a non-ionizing examination, is the first imaging modality performed and therefore the one that incidentally detects cystic lesions.

Pancreatic malignancy is the fourth cause of cancer-related death in Western countries and is predicted to become the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality by 2030. The standard therapies (FOLFIRINOX and gemcitabine with nab-paclitaxel) are not resolutive because this type of cancer is also characterized by a high chemoresistance, due in part to the activity of the ATP Binding Cassette (ABC) pumps accounting for the reduction in the intracellular concentration of the drugs. In this work, we analyze the occurrence of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the MDR-1 gene, in different pancreatic cancer cell lines, and in tissues from pancreatic cancer patients by DNA sequencing, as well as the expression levels of MDR-1 mRNA and protein, by qRT-PCR and Western Blot analysis.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive neoplasia, characterized by early metastasis, low diagnostic rates at early stages, resistance to drugs, and poor prognosis. There is an urgent need to better characterize this disease in order to identify efficient diagnostic/prognostic biomarkers. Since microRNAs (miRNAs) contribute to oncogenesis and metastasis formation in PDAC, they are considered potential candidates for fulfilling this task.

Using multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging, it is now possible to diagnose prostate cancer and categorize its risk. As it can accurately determine the extracapsu- lar extension of the tumor, invasion of seminal vesicles, involvement of lymph nodes, and the potential presence of bone metastases, multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging plays a crucial role not only in the diagnosis but also in the local staging of prostate cancer. The patients with a history of negative biopsy/increasing prostate- specific antigen and the existence of further data supporting its use in biopsy-naive patients and active surveillance are the most blatant indications for multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging in guidelines.

Barrett's oesophagus is a pathological condition whereby the normal oesophageal squamous mucosa is replaced by specialised, intestinal-type metaplasia, which is strongly linked to chronic gastro-oesophageal reflux. A correct endoscopic and histological diagnosis is pivotal in the management of Barrett's oesophagus to identify patients who are at high risk of progression to neoplasia. The presence and grade of dysplasia and the characteristics of visible lesions within the mucosa of Barrett's oesophagus are both important to guide the most appropriate endoscopic therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess how effectively faecal calprotectin can differentiate between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), considering that their symptoms often overlap.
  • - Researchers reviewed data from 17 studies including nearly 2,000 patients, finding that faecal calprotectin had a sensitivity of 85.8% and specificity of 91.7%, indicating it can be a reliable diagnostic tool.
  • - The results showed that faecal calprotectin performed better in Western countries and at lower cut-off levels (≤50 μg/g), although most studies analyzed had a high risk of bias.
