Research Trends and Prospects of Medical Anthropology: Concepts and Their Intersection with History of Medicine.

This study explores the history of research in Medical Anthropology by examining key concepts in the field with a focus on their relevance with findings from the field of History of Medicine. The concepts discussed in this paper are Medical Pluralism, Social Suffering, Biopolitics, and Care. Since concepts internalize the ethnographic gaze, what this paper aims is to trace the development of the gaze on a historical axis.

Perceived discrimination and mental health among older African Americans: the role of psychological well-being.

Objectives: Examine the effect of perceived discrimination (both racial and non-racial) on the mental health of older African Americans and explore the buffering role of psychological well-being (purpose in life and self-acceptance).

Methods: Using an older African American subsample from the National Health Measurement Study (n = 397), multiple regression model by gender was used to estimate the effects of two types of discrimination (every day and lifetime) on SF-36 mental component and mediating role of two concepts of psychological well-being.

Results: With no gender difference on the everyday discrimination, older men experienced more lifetime discrimination than older women.

Antithrombotic and antiplatelet activities of pelargonidin in vivo and in vitro.

Pelargonidin is a well-known red pigment found in plants, and has been reported as having important biological activities that are potentially beneficial for human health. However, the possible roles of pelargonidin as an anticoagulant and the underlying mechanism have not yet been elucidated. We tested the effect of pelargonidin and its glucoside-conjugated form, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, on the clotting times, such as activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and prothrombin time (PT), and the activities and productions of thrombin and activated factor X (FXa).

Antiseptic effect of vicenin-2 and scolymoside from Cyclopia subternata (honeybush) in response to HMGB1 as a late sepsis mediator in vitro and in vivo.

Cyclopia subternata is a medicinal plant commonly used in traditional medicine to relieve pain. In this study, we investigated the antiseptic effects and underlying mechanisms of vicenin-2 and scolymoside, which are 2 active compounds from C. subternata that act against high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1)-mediated septic responses in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and mice.

Inhibitory effects of lysozyme on endothelial protein C receptor shedding in vitro and in vivo.

Lysozyme protects us from the ever-present danger of bacterial infection and binds to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) with high affinity. Beyond its role in the activation of protein C, the endothelial cell protein C receptor (EPCR) plays an important role in the cytoprotective pathway. EPCR can be shed from the cell surface, which is mediated by tumor necrosis factor-α converting enzyme (TACE).

The condensin component NCAPG2 regulates microtubule-kinetochore attachment through recruitment of Polo-like kinase 1 to kinetochores.

The early event of microtubule-kinetochore attachment is a critical stage for precise chromosome segregation. Here we report that NCAPG2, which is a component of the condensin II complex, mediates chromosome segregation through microtubule-kinetochore attachment by recruiting PLK1 to prometaphase kinetochores. NCAPG2 colocalizes with PLK1 at prometaphase kinetochores and directly interacts with the polo-box domain (PBD) of PLK1 via its highly conserved C-terminal region.

Glyceollin improves endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced insulin resistance through CaMKK-AMPK pathway in L6 myotubes.

Glyceollin has been shown to have antidiabetic properties, although its molecular mechanism is not known. Here, we have investigated the metabolic effects of glyceollin in animal models of insulin resistance and in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-responsive muscle cells. db/db mice were treated with glyceollin for 4weeks and triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels were measured.

Comparison of the toxicity of aqueous and ethanol fractions of Angelica keiskei leaf using the eye irritancy test.

To determine whether aqueous and ethanol fractions of the Angelica keiskei leaf exert toxicity when used for cosmetic purposes, we performed the acute eye irritancy test. Animals were treated with sample fractions (100 mg/dose) according to standard procedure guidelines. No significant changes or damage was detected in the fraction-treated groups in terms of ocular lesions in the cornea, the size of the cornea with turbidity, swelling of the eyelid and emission discharge.

p53 acetylation enhances Taxol-induced apoptosis in human cancer cells.

Microtubule inhibitors (MTIs) such as Taxol have been used for treating various malignant tumors. Although MTIs have been known to induce cell death through mitotic arrest, other mechanisms can operate in MTI-induced cell death. Especially, the role of p53 in this process has been controversial for a long time.

Soybean glyceollins mitigate inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 expression levels via suppression of the NF-κB signaling pathway in RAW 264.7 cells.

Glyceollins, produced to induce disease resistance responses against specific species, such as an incompatible pathogen Phytophthora sojae in soybeans, have the potential to exhibit anti-inflammatory activity in RAW 264.7 cells. To investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of elicited glyceollins via a signaling pathway, we studied the glyceollin signaling pathway using several assays including RNA and protein expression levels.

Energy transfer in a pi-conjugated liquid crystalline molecule with two chromophores of rigid biphenyl core and pyrene head moieties.

We investigate the energy transfer of a highly ordered pi-conjugated liquid crystalline molecule containing two chromophores of biphenyl and pyrene moiety, in which the molecule was prepared by esterification of fluorinated biphenyl compound and 1-pyrenebutanol. DSC, POM and XRD results show that this molecule forms a highly ordered smectic liquid crystalline mesophase, in which the pi-conjugated molecule was strongly packed together over large-areas. We show that the liquid crystalline bi-chromophoric systems with highly ordered structure exhibit the energy hopping and transfer to the chromophore with the energetically lowest S1 state.

Toxicity value for 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol using a benchmark dose methodology.

3-Monochloropropane-1,2-diol (alpha-chlorohydrin, 3-MCPD) is a well-known contaminant that has been detected in a wide range of foods, and that is principally generated in foods prepared by hydrochloric acid hydrolysis, such as acid-hydrolyzed vegetable protein (acid-HVP). 3-MCPD is nephrotoxic to animals at high doses and induced tumors in some organs in both sexes of rodents. NITR have recently reported on the carcinogenicity of 3-MCPD in SD rats that were exposed for 2 years to drinking water.

Arthritis pain.

Arthritic pain is a common and disabling problem for many older adults. There is widespread evidence that despite its prevalance and debilitating effects on the physical, emotional and cognitive status of older adults, arthritic pain remains under-treated in those age 65 and older. This condition significantly and negatively impacts older adults' quality of life and is a critical problem that requires the attention of gerontological social work.

15-deoxy-Delta 12,14-ProstaglandinJ2 regulates dedifferentiation through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma-dependent pathway but not COX-2 expression in articular chondrocytes.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors-gamma (PPAR-gamma) is critical for phenotype determination at early differentiation stages of mesenchymal cells, whereas its physiological role is unclear. Therefore, we investigated the role of 15-deoxy-Delta(12,14)-prostaglandinJ2 (15d-PGJ2), the natural receptor ligand for PPAR-gamma, on dedifferentiation and inflammatory responses, such as COX-2 expression and PGE2 production, in articular chondrocytes. Our data indicate that the 15d-PGJ2 caused a loss of differentiated chondrocyte phenotype as demonstrated by inhibition of type II collagen and proteoglycan synthesis.

Anti-tumor activity of Gastrodia elata Blume is closely associated with a GTP-Ras-dependent pathway.

Gastrodia elata Blume (GEB) is an important medicinal plant in Korea. In order to confirm the anti-tumor activities of GEB extracts, we carried out various in vitro anti-tumor assays, including a wound assay and an invasion assay using an ethyl ether extract of GEB. The results showed that the GEB extract exhibits potent anti-tumor activity in vitro in a dose-dependent manner.

Factors affecting burden of South Koreans providing care to disabled older family members.

This study examined the determinants of caregiving burden among South Koreans who care for their disabled older family members. A sample of 1000 primary caregivers taken from the Comprehensive Study for Elderly Welfare Policy in Seoul, South Korea was analyzed. Independent variables included the demographic characteristics of caregivers and care recipients, the severity of cognitive impairment among care recipients, care recipients' functional abilities, financial adequacy and caregivers' degree of social support.
