This study explores the history of research in Medical Anthropology by examining key concepts in the field with a focus on their relevance with findings from the field of History of Medicine. The concepts discussed in this paper are Medical Pluralism, Social Suffering, Biopolitics, and Care. Since concepts internalize the ethnographic gaze, what this paper aims is to trace the development of the gaze on a historical axis.

Methods: Using an older African American subsample from the National Health Measurement Study (n = 397), multiple regression model by gender was used to estimate the effects of two types of discrimination (every day and lifetime) on SF-36 mental component and mediating role of two concepts of psychological well-being.
Results: With no gender difference on the everyday discrimination, older men experienced more lifetime discrimination than older women.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe investigate the energy transfer of a highly ordered pi-conjugated liquid crystalline molecule containing two chromophores of biphenyl and pyrene moiety, in which the molecule was prepared by esterification of fluorinated biphenyl compound and 1-pyrenebutanol. DSC, POM and XRD results show that this molecule forms a highly ordered smectic liquid crystalline mesophase, in which the pi-conjugated molecule was strongly packed together over large-areas. We show that the liquid crystalline bi-chromophoric systems with highly ordered structure exhibit the energy hopping and transfer to the chromophore with the energetically lowest S1 state.

3-Monochloropropane-1,2-diol (alpha-chlorohydrin, 3-MCPD) is a well-known contaminant that has been detected in a wide range of foods, and that is principally generated in foods prepared by hydrochloric acid hydrolysis, such as acid-hydrolyzed vegetable protein (acid-HVP). 3-MCPD is nephrotoxic to animals at high doses and induced tumors in some organs in both sexes of rodents. Therefore, we investigated the role of 15-deoxy-Delta(12,14)-prostaglandinJ2 (15d-PGJ2), the natural receptor ligand for PPAR-gamma, on dedifferentiation and inflammatory responses, such as COX-2 expression and PGE2 production, in articular chondrocytes. Our data indicate that the 15d-PGJ2 caused a loss of differentiated chondrocyte phenotype as demonstrated by inhibition of type II collagen and proteoglycan synthesis.

In order to confirm the anti-tumor activities of GEB extracts, we carried out various in vitro anti-tumor assays, including a wound assay and an invasion assay using an ethyl ether extract of GEB. The results showed that the GEB extract exhibits potent anti-tumor activity in vitro in a dose-dependent manner.

This study examined the determinants of caregiving burden among South Koreans who care for their disabled older family members. A sample of 1000 primary caregivers taken from the Comprehensive Study for Elderly Welfare Policy in Seoul, South Korea was analyzed. Independent variables included the demographic characteristics of caregivers and care recipients, the severity of cognitive impairment among care recipients, care recipients' functional abilities, financial adequacy and caregivers' degree of social support.
