Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs), initially designed for research but now widely misused as drugs.
  • It focuses on assessing the pharmacological activity of fifteen SCRAs identified by law enforcement and the illicit market, revealing their interactions with CB1R and CB2R receptors.
  • Findings indicate specific structural features influencing the drugs' effects on the receptors, highlighting two SCRAs with distinct activities in animal models, which aids understanding of SCRAs' potential impact on health.

The Cannabis sativa plant contains more than 120 cannabinoids. With the exceptions of ∆-tetrahydrocannabinol (∆-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), comparatively little is known about the pharmacology of the less-abundant plant-derived (phyto) cannabinoids. The best-studied transducers of cannabinoid-dependent effects are type 1 and type 2 cannabinoid receptors (CB1R, CB2R).
