Parent-of-origin effects (POE) such as genomic imprinting influence growth and body composition in livestock, rodents, and humans. Here, we report the results of a genome scan to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) with POE on growth and carcass traits in Angus × Brahman cattle crossbreds. We identified 24 POE-QTL on 15 Bos taurus autosomes (BTAs) of which six were significant at 5% genome-wide (GW) level and 18 at the 5% chromosome-wide (CW) significance level.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) attack guanine bases in DNA easily and form 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), which can bind to thymidine rather than cytosine, based on which, the level of 8-OHdG is generally regarded as a biomarker of mutagenesis consequent to oxidative stress. For example, higher levels of 8-OHdG are noted in Helicobacter pylori-associated chronic atrophic gastritis as well as gastric cancer. However, we have found that exogenous 8-OHdG can paradoxically reduce ROS production, attenuate the nuclear factor-κB signaling pathway, and ameliorate the expression of proinflammatory mediators such as interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, cyclo-oxygenase-2, and inducible nitric oxide synthase in addition to expression of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase (NOX)-1, NOX organizer-1 and NOX activator-1 in various conditions of inflammation-based gastrointestinal (GI) diseases including gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, and even colitis-associated carcinogenesis.

Upon dimerization by oxidation, Hsp33 functions as a molecular chaperone in prokaryotes. Previously published structures of both the inactive and active species are of doubtful relevance to the solution conformations since the inactive (reduced) crystal structure was dimeric, while the active (oxidized) species was crystallized with a truncation of its regulation domain. The embryonic stem cell test (EST) is a validated in vitro embryotoxicity test; however, as the inhibition of cardiac differentiation alone is used as a differentiation endpoint in the EST, it may not be a useful test to screen embryotoxic chemicals that affect the differentiation of noncardiac tissues. Previously, methylmercury (MeHg), cadmium and arsenic compounds, which are heavy metals that induce developmental neurotoxicity in vivo, were misclassified as nonembryotoxic with the EST. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been reinforced in alumina (Al2O3) matrix to overcome the inherent brittleness of the Al2O3 matrix. In this work, MWCNTs were treated by acid to provide hydrophilicity to hydrophobic MWCNTs, inducing the homogeneous dispersion of MWCNTs in an aqueous solution. Aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3) as a Al2O3 precursor was added in the solution with the modified MWCNTs, and then this mixture solution was filtered at room temperature.

Resorcin[4]arene-based tetrakis(N-hydantoinylamido)cavitand 1 forms a stable molecular capsule in the presence of suitable anionic guests such as CH(3)OSO(3)(-) or BF(4)(-) in C(2)D(2)Cl(4). Molecular capsule G(2)@1(2) is stabilized by the eight intermolecular imide N-H···O═C hydrogen bondings, two from each four paired hydantoinyl units, and the eight intramolecular amide N-H···O-CH(2)-O hydrogen bondings, four on each two cavitands. The breast cancer-associated gene 1 (BRCA1) is the most frequently mutated tumor suppressor gene in familial breast cancers. Mutations in BRCA1 also predispose to other types of cancers, pointing to a fundamental role of this pathway in tumor suppression and emphasizing the need for effective chemoprevention in these high-risk patients. The dependence of global green tea metabolome on plucking positions was investigated through (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis coupled with multivariate statistical data set. Pattern recognition methods, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal projection on latent structure-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), were employed for a finding metabolic discrimination among fresh green tea leaves plucked at different positions from young to old leaves. In addition to clear metabolic discrimination among green tea leaves, elevations in theanine, caffeine, and gallic acid levels but reductions in catechins, such as epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), glucose, and sucrose levels were observed, as the green tea plant grows up.

Colitis-associated cancer (CAC) is one of clear examples of inflammation-carcinogenesis sequence, by which the strict control of colitis with potent anti-inflammatory or antioxidative agent offers the chance of cancer prevention. Supported with the facts that Rac1 binds and activates STAT3, which are significantly upregulated in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as well as CAC, but 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-oxo-7,8-dihydrodeoxyguanosine or 8-OHdG) paradoxically can block Rac1 activation and subsequent NADPH oxidase (NOX) inactivation in various inflammation models, we hypothesized that attenuated Rac1-STAT3 and COX-NF-κB pathway by exogenous 8-OHdG administration may ameliorate inflammatory signaling in dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis and can prevent CAC. Before commencing carcinogenesis model, we checked whether exogenous 8-OHdG can alleviate IBD, for which interleukin (IL)-10 knockout mice were designed to ingest 5% DSS for 1 week, and 8-OHdG is given through intraperitoneal route daily.

15-Deoxy-Δ(12,14)-prostaglandin J(2) (15d-PGJ(2)) is a representative J-series cyclopentenone prostaglandin bearing an electrophilic α,β-unsaturated carbonyl group. In the present study, treatment of human breast cancer MCF-7 cells with 15d-PGJ(2) caused the up-regulation of the glutamate cysteine ligase catalytic (GCLC) subunit, the rate-limiting enzyme in glutathione (GSH) synthesis. 15d-PGJ(2) treatment caused nuclear translocation and transactivation of Nrf2, a redox-sensitive transcription factor responsible for induced expression of antioxidant and other cytoprotective genes.

Background And Aim: The term "stress-related mucosal disease" (SRMD) represents conditions ranging from superficial mucosal damage to focal deep mucosal damage in the stomach, of which pathogenesis is deduced to be violent mucosal ischemia or excess oxidative stress, but not fully clarified yet.
