In this blinded randomized and controlled study, the anthelmintic efficacy of a tablet formula of ivermectin-praziquantel was evaluated in horses experimentally infected with three species of Strongylus larvae. Eighteen previously dewormed horses were inoculated on study day 0 with third-stage larvae of Strongylus vulgaris, Strongylus equinus, and Strongylus edentatus. The horses were randomly allocated to three groups (n = 6): test-drug (tablet formula), positive-control (reference gel), and negative-control (placebo tablet).

S100A8, a calcium-binding protein, is associated with keratinocyte differentiation, inflammation and wound healing. S100A8 is induced by various skin stresses and diseases, which suggests that S100A8 plays a role in those processes. However, it has not been reported how the expression of S100A8 is affected during skin aging or whether S100A8 plays a role in the skin aging process.

Previous studies have shown that topical steroid and shampoo containing zinc pyrithione provide clinical benefits for treatment of scalp seborrheic dermatitis. But the clinical efficacy of topical tacrolimus, a newly developed calcineurin inhibitor on seborrheic dermatitis, is not well investigated yet. We wanted to compare the clinical efficacy of topical tacrolimus with that of conventional treatment (zinc pyrithione shampoo and topical betamethasone) for treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp.

Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 promotes ultraviolet (UV)-triggered long-term detrimental effects such as cancer formation and premature skin aging. Although histone modifications may play a crucial role in the transcriptional regulation of MMP-1, the relationship between UV-induced histone modification and MMP-1 expression is not completely understood. Here, we identify regulators of histone acetylation that may link UV-mediated DNA damage and MMP-1 induction by UV in cultured human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) in vitro.

The molten salt waste from the pyroprocess is one of the problematic wastes to directly apply a conventional process such as vitrification or ceramization. This study suggested a novel method using a reactive material for metal chlorides at a molten temperature of salt waste, and then converting them into manageable product at a high temperature. The inorganic composite, SAP (SiO2-Al2O3-P2O5), synthesized by a conventional sol-gel process has three or four distinctive domains that are bonded sequentially, Si-O-Si-O-A-O-P-O-P.

The zucchini (Cucurbita pepo) cultivars 'Patty Green', 'Black Beauty', and 'Gold Rush' were cultivated on weathered dioxin-contaminated soil in pots, and concentrations of the 29 dioxin-like compounds that were assigned WHO-TEFs, three non-toxic polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and two non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were analyzed. Toxic equivalent (TEQ) values accumulated in 'Black Beauty' and 'Gold Rush' were about 180 times higher than those in 'Patty Green'. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) based on total mass concentration of the twelve dioxin-like PCBs was higher than those of the seven PCDDs and ten PCDFs in all the cultivars.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of computed tomography colonography (CTC) versus colonoscopy in detecting colorectal polyps in asymptomatic adults in Korea to assess CTC's potential as a screening tool.
  • A total of 241 participants underwent both CTC and colonoscopy, with results showing that CTC had lower sensitivity for detecting larger polyps compared to colonoscopy, particularly struggling with flat polyps.
  • The findings suggest that CTC is not a reliable screening option in Korea, and the type of bowel preparation used significantly influenced the accuracy of CTC.

Liver transplantation has been considered to be the only causal treatment for liver cirrhosis patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) due to its theoretical advantage of eliminating both the tumor and liver disease. However, because of the shortage of donor organs, it is strongly recommended that liver transplantations should be performed on cirrhotic patients with HCCs only when the patients meet the predetermined criteria in terms of number and extent of HCCs. Imaging is thus decisive in the patient inclusion or exclusion from transplantation lists.

Molten salt oxidation (MSO) is one of the promising alternative destruction technologies for chlorinated organics, because it is capable of trapping chlorine during organic destruction. This study investigated the characteristics of a two-stage MSO reactor system for the destruction of CCl(4) and C(6)H(5)Cl. Investigated parameters were the MSO reactor temperature (from 1023 K to 1223 K) and the excess oxidizing air feed rate (50% and 100%).

A relationship has been suggested between mast cells (MCs) and male pattern hair loss (MPHL), because of histological evidence of perifollicular fibrosis and increased mast cell numbers. Two paired punch biopsies were taken from balding vertexes and non-balding occipital promontory areas of ten patients with MPHL (Ludwig-Hamilton IIIv to IV) and from five normal subjects aged from 20 to 35 years. Masson trichrome and Victoria blue staining were performed to observe collagen frameworks and elastic fiber structures.
