Background: Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MEK 1/2) are central components of the RAS signalling pathway and are attractive targets for cancer therapy. These agents continue to be investigated in KRAS mutant colon cancer but are met with significant resistance. Clinical investigations have demonstrated that these strategies are not well tolerated by patients.

We created a noninvasive prediction model for diagnosing gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) using contrast-enhanced harmonic endoscopic ultrasound (CEH-EUS).
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 176 patients who underwent CEH-EUS from October 2011 to August 2017.
Stroke is the leading cause of physical disability among adults. Stem cells such as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) secrete a variety of bioactive substances, including trophic factors and extracellular vesicles (EVs), into the injured brain, which may be associated with enhanced neurogenesis, angiogenesis, and neuroprotection. EVs are circular membrane fragments (30 nm-1 μm) that are shed from the cell surface and harbor proteins, microRNAs, etc.

Methods: We evaluated 36 postmenopausal women who received a total thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid cancer and were undergoing TSH suppressive therapy with levothyroxine. Postmenopausal women (n=94) matched for age and body mass index were recruited as healthy controls.
Background And Aim: Adequate tissue acquisition is important in making treatment decisions for patients with upper gastrointestinal subepithelial tumors (SETs). This study aimed to compare the outcomes of endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) with those of the unroofing biopsy technique.
Methods: This study was a single-center, prospective comparative study conducted at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine.
Purpose: Cigarette smoking (CS) is one of the major risk factors of cerebral atherosclerotic disease, however, its level of contribution to extracranial and intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ECAS and ICAS) was not fully revealed yet. The purpose of our study was to assess the association of CS to cerebral atherosclerosis along with other risk factors.
Materials And Methods: All consecutive patients who were angiographically confirmed with severe symptomatic cerebral atherosclerotic disease between January 2002 and December 2012 were included in this study.
Current lung cancer treatments are far from satisfactory; thus, finding novel treatment targets is crucial. We recently identified procollagen-lysine, 2-oxoglutarate 5-dioxygenase 3 (PLOD3), which is involved in fibrosis and tissue remodeling as a radioresistance-related protein in lung cancer cells; however, its mechanism is unclear. In this study, we designed human PLOD3-specific short interfering (si)RNAs and tested their effects on tumor growth inhibition in vitro and in vivo.

In the case of two-dimensional materials such as graphene, the large-scale growth of single-oriented materials on an amorphous substrate has remained unsolved. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that the presence of uniformly oriented graphene seeds facilitates the growth of millimeter-scale single-oriented graphene with 3 × 4 mm on palladium silicide, which is an amorphous thin film, where the uniformly oriented graphene seeds were epitaxially grown.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the proposed changes in the eighth edition of the tumor-node-metastasis staging system (TNM-8) compared with the seventh edition (TNM-7) in terms of pathologic subtypes, using a large multicenter thyroid cancer cohort.
Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 7717 patients with papillary (PTC) and 273 with follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) who underwent thyroid surgery between 1996 and 2005. We assessed the proportion of variation explained (PVE) to compare the predictive accuracy of disease-specific survival (DSS).
We aimed to compare the diagnostic yield between temporal bone computed tomography (TBCT) and internal auditory canal MRI (IAC MRI) for the etiologic diagnosis of children with congenital single-sided deafness (SSD) and the evaluation of cochlear implant (CI) candidacy. In the original cohort, 24 subjects with congenital SSD were enrolled and underwent both TBCT and IAC MRI. We recruited an additional 22 consecutive infants with congenital SSD (the supplementary cohort) and evaluated in particular the cochlear nerve (CN) integrity using IAC MRI.

While the development of tumor-treating fields (TTFields), electric fields with alternating low and intermediate intensity has facilitated glioblastoma treatment, clinical outcomes of TTFields are reportedly inconsistent. However, combinatorial administration of chemotherapy with TTFields has proven effective for glioblastoma patients.

Methods: A randomized, open-label, single-dose, two-treatment, two-way crossover study with a 7-day washout period was conducted to compare the pharmacokinetic (PK) characteristics and bioequivalence between an FDC of fimasartan/rosuvastatin and the separate co-administration of fimasartan and rosuvastatin in healthy Korean volunteers. The plasma concentrations of fimasartan and rosuvastatin were analyzed by a validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method, for which serial blood samples were collected for up to 48 hours post-administration of fimasartan and 72 hours post-administration of rosuvastatin, in each period.
Procollagen-lysine, 2-oxoglutarate 5-dioxygenase (PLOD3), a membrane-bound homodimeric enzyme, hydroxylates lysyl residues in collagen-like peptides; however, its role in lung cancer is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the role of PLOD3 as a pro-metastatic factor and to elucidate the underlying mechanism. First, we experimentally confirmed the release of PLOD3 in circulation in animal models, rendering it a potential serum biomarker for lung cancer in humans.

Objectives: Based on the tumor-node-metastasis staging system, eighth edition (TNM-8), N1b is no longer used as a variable to determine final stage in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). We aimed to evaluate the predictability of a simple modification of the TNM staging with N1b classification in a large multicenter thyroid cancer cohort.
Materials And Methods: This study included 7717 patients with PTC who underwent thyroid surgery between 1996 and 2005 from six tertiary hospitals.
To date, Korean hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa), has been widely used for household and commercial purposes. Although the medicinal efficacy of hinoki cypress essential oil has been observed, that of the essential oil‑derived terpenes, which exhibit a mechanism that acts against lung inflammation, remains to be fully elucidated. The present study investigated the anti‑inflammatory effect of hinoki cypress leaf extracted essential oil on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‑stimulated WI38 fibroblast cells by inhibiting the nuclear factor κ‑light‑chain‑enhancer of activated B cells (NF‑κB) pathway, which exhibited lung tissue protection through the olfactory administration of essential oil in Sprague‑Dawley rats.

We therefore hypothesized that MSC-derived EVs (MSC-EVs) possess therapeutic molecules similar to MSCs. Moreover, given their nature as nanosized and lipid-shielded particles, the intravenous infusion of MSC-EVs would be advantageous over MSCs as a safer therapeutic approach.

Glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) is a regulator of ferroptosis (iron-dependent, non-apoptotic cell death); its inhibition can render therapy-resistant cancer cells susceptible to ferroptosis. However, some cancer cells develop mechanisms protective against ferroptosis; understanding these mechanisms could help overcome chemoresistance. In this study, we investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance to ferroptosis induced by GPX4 inhibition in head and neck cancer (HNC).

Methods: Our study population consisted of 13,004 individuals initially free of type 2 diabetes the ages between 20 and 69 years, who underwent routine health examinations between January 2012 and December 2012 and returned for follow-up examinations between January 2016 and December 2016.
Tumor treating fields (TTFs) are a newly developed cancer therapy technology using an alternating electric field that may be a possible candidate for overcoming the limitations of conventional treatment methods currently used in cancer treatment. Although clinical results using TTFs appear promising, concerns regarding side effects must be clarified to demonstrate the effectiveness of this treatment method. To investigate the side effects of TTF treatment, the damage to normal cell lines and normal tissue of a mouse model was compared with the damage to tumor cells and tumors in a mouse model after TTF treatment.
