Background: This study aimed to understand the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) classified as having "good outcomes" and determine associated sociodemographic, psychological, and clinical factors.

Methods: Participants were 86 patients with aSAH with modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores of 0-2 in our hospital between February 2003 and April 2014. Participants completed self-report questionnaires examining sociodemographic characteristics and the following self-rating scales: the hospital anxiety and depression scale, Pittsburgh sleep quality index, and EuroQoL-5 Dimension Index (EQ-5D).

Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to be effective in lowering triglyceride (TG) levels; however, tolerability issues arise due to the large size of the pills. The purpose of this study was to examine the safety, compliance, and efficacy of Omethyl QTlet soft capsules (OQCs). This multi-center, prospective, observational study evaluated the safety, compliance, and efficacy of OQCs.

Article Synopsis
  • Limited treatment options for glioblastoma (GBM) highlight the potential for targeting cancer-specific metabolic pathways by inhibiting key enzymes CPT1A and G6PD, which are vital for fatty acid oxidation and the pentose phosphate pathway.
  • Experiments demonstrated that knocking down CPT1A and G6PD reduced GBM tumor cell viability and growth, supported by transcriptome analysis and metabolite profiling indicating disrupted metabolic pathways.
  • The combination therapy using etomoxir and DHEA not only inhibited tumor growth in cell cultures but also extended survival in mice models, suggesting a promising therapeutic strategy for GBM.

Cerebral vasospasm is the most important cause of morbidity after an aneurysm clipping in the early postoperative period. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate whether the incidence of vasospasms differs when using propofol or desflurane for an emergent aneurysm clipping. The data from 102 patients (50 in the propofol group, 52 in the desflurane group) were analyzed.

Objective: Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is used to treat intractable intracranial hypertension after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Cranioplasty (CP) is typically performed weeks or months later. However, the optimal timing for CP is unknown.

Background: Fever is a very common complication that has been related to poor outcomes after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). The incidence of acalculous cholecystitis is reportedly 0.5%-5% in critically ill patients, and cerebrovascular disease is a risk factor for acute cholecystitis (AC).

We report a case of a 23-year-old female immigrant from China who was diagnosed with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis affecting her lung and brain, resistant to the standard first-line therapeutics and streptomycin. She was treated with prothionamide, moxifloxacin, cycloserine, and kanamycin. However, her headache and brain lesion worsened.

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) have been reported in various tissues, especially the skin and subcutaneous soft tissue of the head and neck. We report a 60-year-old man who presented with intermittent headache and dizziness for 3 months, but no other neurological symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed the presence of a mass in the pituitary stalk, and contrast-enhanced MRI showed nodular enhancement in this region.

Vestibular schwannoma (VS) usually present the widening of internal auditory canal (IAC), and these bony changes are typically limited to IAC, not extend to temporal bone. Temporal bone invasion by VS is extremely rare. We report 51-year-old man who revealed temporal bone destruction beyond IAC by unilateral VS.

Background: Problems that the risk of using antiplatelet/anticoagulant may overwhelm its benefits have been raised. We analyzed patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage who had received antiplatelet/anticoagulant therapy.

Method: A consecutive series of patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage who underwent brain computed tomographic (CT) scans within 48 h from attack.

Terson syndrome was originally used to describe a vitreous hemorrhage arising from aneurysmal subrarachnoid hemorrhage. Terson syndrome can be caused by intracranial hemorrhage, subdural or epidural hematoma and severe brain injury but is extremely rare in intraventricular hemorrhage associated with moyamoya disease. A 41-year-old man presented with left visual disturbance.

We report a rare case of symptomatic Rathke's cleft cyst with thick calcified wall. Brain CT scans revealed a large cystic mass with round thick calcified wall. In this case, we selected the pterional approach instead of transsphenoidal approach due to the possibility of cystic craniopharyngioma.

Objective: Aneurysms are very rarely encountered in the distal posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA). The authors experienced 5 cases with a distal PICA aneurysm among 368 cases of intracranial aneurysms during the period from January 2003 to January 2008. Here, the authors describe their clinical and surgical experiences and include a review of the relevant literature.

A cerebrospinal fluid hydrothorax is a very rare complication following ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt and usually reported in children. We report a case of 47-year-old woman who developed massive hydrothorax and respiratory distress following intrathoracic migration of distal shunt catheter. After the confirmation of catheter in thoracic cavity using radionuclide shuntogram, the patient was successfully treated with laparoscopic shunt catheter reposition.

Meningiomas frequently invade cerebral venus sinuses, especially parasagittal meningioma to superior sagittal sinus. However, most invasions do not reach internal jugular vein. We present a case of parasagittal meningioma extending into the internal jugular vein through the sinuses.

Object: Anterior surgical approaches to the lumbosacral disc spaces are being undertaken with increasing frequency. This increase and the use of minimally invasive techniques themselves have the potential to raise the incidence of major vessel injuries. The purpose of this study was to determine the variability of the vascular anatomy anterior to the lumbosacral spine and to draw conclusions regarding surgical accessibility of the L5-S1 disc space.
