Background: A fiberoptic bronchoscope (FOB) is commonly used to identify the proper placement of a double-lumen endotracheal tube (DLT) for good lung isolation during thoracic surgery. We hypothesized that the FOB-guided method for DLT placement composed of tracheal intubation under initial guidance by a FOB via the bronchial lumen and subsequent selective left-bronchial intubation could be used to reduce the incidence of DLT malposition and reduce the time required for completion of DLT placement and confirmation of proper DLT position during intubation using a left-sided DLT, in comparison to the conventional method under direct laryngoscopy using a Macintosh laryngoscope.

Methods/design: In this randomized controlled pilot trial, 50 patients, aged 18-70 years, scheduled for elective thoracic surgery will be recruited and randomly assigned to two groups according to the method of DLT placement: a FOB-guided method (F) group and a conventional method (C) group.

We retrospectively evaluated the altered biomechanics of the talus in 15 adult patients (7 males, 8 females) with chronic lateral ankle instability when the ankle joint moved actively from full dorsiflexion to full plantarflexion under a non-weight bearing condition. CT images were taken for the unstable ankle and the contralateral normal (control) ankle. Three-dimensional surface models of both ankle joints were reconstructed from the CT data, and we used a computer simulation program to compare both ankle motions of inversion/eversion in the coronal plane, plantarflexion/dorsiflexion in the sagittal plane, and internal rotation/external rotation in the axial plane.

Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) could provide a powerful system to model development of the human esophagus, whose distinct tissue organization compared to rodent esophagus suggests that developmental mechanisms may not be conserved between species. We therefore established an efficient protocol for generating esophageal progenitor cells (EPCs) from human PSCs. We found that inhibition of TGF-ß and BMP signaling is required for sequential specification of EPCs, which can be further purified using cell-surface markers.

Purpose: Immunotherapy of neuroblastoma that remains after myeloablative chemotherapy with anti-GD2 antibody dinutuximab has increased the two-year event-free and overall survival of high-risk neuroblastoma patients; however, 40% of patients develop recurrent disease during or after this treatment. To determine the potential of such antibody-based immunotherapy earlier in treatment, a mouse model was developed in which surgical resection of the primary tumor was followed by therapy of residual disease with dinutuximab combined with -activated human natural killer (aNK) cells.

Perianal abscess and fistula-in-ano are well-described in the pediatric population. They are most common in infants less than 1 year of age and often resolve with oral antibiotics; occasionally they require drainage or fistulotomy. The etiology is commonly associated with cryptoglandular obstruction and subsequent infection, however alternative diagnoses should be considered in cases of recurrent abscesses and fistulae that are refractory to standard treatments.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by hyperplastic pannus formation mediated by activated synovial fibroblasts (RASFs) that cause joint destruction.
